'75 CB550K carbs carburetors on a '76 CB550F?
« on: April 20, 2010, 07:49:44 PM »
Backstory: I just acquired a dirty '76 CB550F (Super Sport) as my first bike. I knew I had my work cut out for me, so I've been doing my research and started by taking the carbs apart and cleaning them. They are pretty nasty inside, and 3 of the 4 float pins or hinges or whatever you call them don't budge... Like they are fused there and the float doesn't even move. I've tried to pull out the pin with needlenose pliers to no avail. I'm not sure what to do, since I can't dip the whole thing in carb cleaner since the floats are plastic, and they'll melt in that stuff (so I'm told).

Question: I found some carbs for sale for like $50 from a '75 CB550K and I'm wondering if I should just buy them and spare myself the trouble of trying to resurrect mine. Will '75 CB550K carburetors work on a '76 CB550F?

I have a set of '74-'76 CB550K carbs(022A) on my '75 CB550F that work just fine.  I'd prefer the original 069A carbs but it came to me this way and I'm not out to fix something that isn't broken.

Yes, they will work fine. But is the inlet manifold a bit longer on the F model??

We had some discussions on why the CB 550 F supersport has a bit more power than the K model. The cam might be a bit different, and someone said the inlet manifold is a bit longer, gives a better mix of air/fuel and thus better power. I don't know - anyone?

I keep going back and forth between entirely new carburetors or just buying the certain pieces I need to rebuild the ones I messed up while disassembling...

Anyone know where I can find JUST float pins? Not the float and pin assembly, but JUST the pins. I don't want to pay $45 for each assembly when all i need is the cute little pin.

I don't see why the K carbs would not wok on the F. Not that big a deal.

I have a 1976 550 F and a 1976 550 K and just looked at the intakes on both.
Look the same to me. If you want to be sure just go to a parts house and check the part numbers on both bikes.

Float pins? Why not try a hobby shop for the right diameter brass wire?
I don't know if it will be stiff enough but it should work.
When I rebuilt my carbs I had a few pins that were frozen.
I lightly sprayed both ends of the float pins with Cyclo carb clean and let it soak into the ends and then I used a small drift punch to drive them out. No damage. Do #1 and #4 carbs first and then #2 and #3 carbs.  Good luck. It wasn't too big a deal for me to get them out in one piece.
