I for one want to know why in 40 years we haven't been able to go back...

Same reason I don't have an RC51.  We've spent the money on other stuff.

Because there isn't a good reason to.

I think we need to get #$%* sorted out here on Earth before we start setting up shop on other worlds and screwing things up there, too.

The only reason we'd go back to the moon now would be to mine it.

And while I agree with you Gordon....

We have spent (as a country) the last 40 years trying to be the global nanny. And really nothing much else.

Vietnam.... Iran/Contra.... Drug War.... Gulf War.... Iraqi Freedom....

Not to mention all of the shows of military force for other "developing" nations. And the billions spent on aid for other countries when we deny aid to even our domestic organizations for children.

Our focus on being the biggest and best and the baddest country out there has showed just how inflated we areally are. We fall.... everyone else falls with us.

The problem with the moon is it has no viable economic contribution to make.  it cannot provide additional living space, and there does not apear to be gold lying around for us to bring back.

Until energy becomes cheap enough to allow/support the technology it would take to keep humans alive there, it will remain just a curiosity.

Maybe some of that cold fusion... ::)

There is water on the moon, there is ice on mars, hold your horses, we'll be back. We may have beat the Russians to the moon but as for sustained presents (sp?) in space they have us beat by a mile. The American people lost interest in going to the moon, seemed routine. Much like every disaster in the history of the space program, we start getting all high and mighty and then screw something up and a few people get killed, refocus and gain attention. We will not have a firm commitment to space in this country until someone, i.e. private sector, can make a buck on it.
That which does not kill you leaves cool scabs which turn into awesome scars.

I think you are right, the Moon flights were more about politics than about science. It is almost universally agreed that the moon was not a captured satellite, it was a pice of the Earth that was torn away from the Earth by an impact. So any minerals there would be available here.

During the Cold War the Soviets feared that space could be weaponized and the Moon would make a perfect platform, it rotated around the globe and need no help staying in a stable and predictable orbit. You would not need a large rocket engine for a large payload since gravity would do most of the work.

Humans love to reach out and explore. We have explored Earth in ships, when we wanted to take to the skies, we did and all you can do is go faster and higher, the X-15 was technically in Space.

Sometimes I think at the root of our space exploration is to find out if we are really alone in this infinite space. Is there a new World out there where our forms of life can be sustained? Could we seed it? Colonize it as we did other parts of this World. Lot's of question and no real answers.

If you were around at that time it was amazing how quickly the public lost interest after Apollo 11.  Of course Apollo 13 had the gripping drama and the first moon rover drew some interest but soon the public let out a big collective yawn.  Also the fact that the supply of Saturn 5 boosters was used up with the last being used to launch Skylab I believe.  After that all the money went to the shuttle which does not have the lift capability to reach escape velocity to break orbit.  So the answer is we couldn't go back because we did not have the tools for the job.

And we didn't have the tools for the job because we didn't want or need them anymore.  If a continued moon presence had been the goal, I'm sure the tools needed to make it happen could have been provided.

I know for most if not all of you guys this is all tongue in cheek but is there anyone here who really thinks it was a hoax?  They faked it 6 times?  The launches were real, hard to fake that.  Did they just hang about in orbit for the duration?  What about the Russians?  They had satellites and radar and could have tracked them in orbit and exposed the whole thing.  At the height of the Cold War the Russians were in on it too?

Sure.  Plenty of things have been covered up successfully.  How about this alien landing in the Washington D.C. in the early '50s?  Hardly anyone is willing to talk about it.

The cover-up is what was found when they got there.
