Six Cylinders of Decision
« on: April 21, 2010, 02:17:01 AM »
A while back I bought a 1982 CBX from a business "friend" in another state.  He is a big dude who rides big bikes.  Had a collection of them in his warehouse.  One was this CBX that he had picked up about 7 years earlier from a guy who laid it down at a slow speed.

I showed him my 650 cafe and he said I should have this bike because he never got around to fixing it back up.  He let it go for less than parting it out for sure.  Heck it was the big white, cop-bike style that needs to be chopped up and painted, but had the better suspension front and rear w/ Pro-link swingarm.  It was perfect for my penchant making it "my own".

Long story short is I went down to CA and trailered it back to Oregon.  The rear frame where the big ol luggage goes took the hit on the left side and bent the seat frame portion over to the right a bit so I knew I had that to deal with.  The fairing got a small crack by the mirror and the mirror is gonzo in the guys warehouse somewhere.  I had Mike Nixon redo the carbs since they sat forever and they need a jig and whatnot and I hear he dominates the carb scene.  So I give the tank a good coating (not POR-15) and put oil in just to hear the F1 sound of this thing... and oil is leaking slowly from somewhere beneath this technological beast of 80's super-engineering.

It's coming from the engine block area right about where the through bolt goes to hold engine, frame and swing arm together.

So I tore into my 650 tonight instead and have the top end off for a rebuild and all the while I'm debating...

A) parting it out?
B) dismantling the whole fricker and trying to fix it, realize it'll never be the same and then part it out?
C) JB Weld the 1 inch crack just to hear it roar and then part it out?
D) Is there another choice?

Pics to come tomorrow.  Your input appreciated but be easy on me.  I'm a bit delicate at the moment.

Well, I'm a bit prejudiced myself, having an '80 CBX and Loving it! My own thoughts would be to fix it and build to the '79-'80 look. They ARE something to HEAR AND RIDE, IMHO! Different strokes for different folks though.

I'm sure you will get a variety of comments on THIS one. IF it were a '79, the return on it would be really worth the efforts.

Like to see those pics too.

I didn't know you had a CBX Bill!

Anyway, would you agree with me that significant engine work on one of these needs seriously deep pockets...  ?

Yeah Steve, a buddy of mine had this '80 CBX that he'd gone through and fixed up and I'd always admired that bike. Well, last year, my buddy decided that he needed to part with it, as he'd had some medical problems and just didn't really trust himself to take it out like it needed and offered me a pretty good deal on it. He didn't want to sell it to just anybody and wanted it to be taken care of,as he HAD put a lot of effort into it to make it really nice. I'm pretty proud to have this bike! 8) Can you tell? ::)

And yes, it could get quite expensive dealing with a CBX. It just depends on what is wrong with it AND how much expertise you have as well. IF MINE ever needs engine work, I'm liable to be in a pickle, unless I am made aware of parts that can be suitable substituted. ;)

Thanks Steve. I AM pretty proud of it myself. ;D Never thought I'd EVER have one of those, with the price they bring. Of course the '79 brings more than any of the other CBXs. Only thing I wish the '80 had was the '79's gauges. Other than that. I'm just fine with what I've got. ;)

Thank you Jeff, I am a lot prejudice myself and thing it's Beautiful as well. ;D I just like to sit and look at it and then start it up, just to hear that Sound that it makes. I've heard others say that the CBX is heavy and all, but when I ride, it feels great and doesn't feel all that big. Then I look down at the cylinders hanging out on each side. ;)

Yeah, I do like the naked look like Bill's, mine would look better in a black coat with some checkers and red piping and striping.  I think I am going with jacking a weld onto it and at least fire it up and hear it.

Now I just need a lift strong enough to get it off the ground and stable enough for me to trust my coconut being under it.

If it was any other year I wouldn't jack with it's stock colors, but I think everyone should fix what Honda did to the color scheme their 82 CBX.

Anyone know of a trustworthy mechanic in Portland to have a look at the location and severity of this crack?  Still havent gotten pics, the salmon are running here in the NW now and I have been taken "adrift"

That's a magnificent looking machine Bill.
Years ago, I remember the very first time that I stood next to one (and touched it) in a Honda dealership workshop in Melbourne that was being serviced.
(Brand spanking new)
It's one of those memories that has always stayed with me.

Thanks Mick, I intend to keep this one and try to keep it in this shape, long as I can. Sure does feel good to get it out and go for a spin on it. Your memory of the CBX is like MY first sighting of a '69 CB750. It was just an AWESOME sight that I'll NEVER forget either. ;)
