My block is ready !
« on: April 21, 2010, 05:55:40 PM »
Machine shop just called my cylinders are bored and ready to pick up. I've been all winter on this engine rebuild/ 836 big bore. Lets just say I went over budjet, and machine shops don't get in any hurry. Thank God for OT at work this winter or it would have never happened.
Can anyone give me first hand reports on Plastikote engine paint/primer holding up on the block and head ? I used VHT on the case. Also whats best to lube the cylinders with during assembley? A friend said they use a powder of some kind  when building race engines to ensure the rings seat.         Thanks !   I'll post some pics asap.

Thats what I was gonna do, lube the cylinders with oil and install the new pistons. I've got the Wiseco 836 kit. Is that what everyone is doing? Anyone ever heard of this powder? This guy knows his stuff and was concerned my my rings would not seat properly using oil.

Yeah, I've heard of guys sprinkling Bon Ami or Comet into the carburetor of a running motor to "break it in". I don't think your guy knows his stuff. Use oil.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Find the cheapest conventional oil you can.  The fewer additives the better.  Use that to wipe your cylinders down with.

Powder? Maybe graphite? Never heard of powder.

They make special pre-assembly grease, in a pinch use something like lithium grease or moly lube. Put a tiny bit on all the moving surfaces in contact. Main bearings , journals if they are  apart. A tiny bit on the tops of the valve stems, rockers, cam journals, cam towers, anything that is going to turn before there is oil needs just a smear.

A  teaspoon or two of oil in the bores helps with getting the rings to slide into the bores. Non-detergent 30w is probably best, but anything is going to work better than nothing.
