74 CB350f rookie engine sound question/new to board
« on: April 21, 2010, 09:12:07 AM »
Hello everybody! I just picked up a '74 CB350f in very good condition, 8k miles.
I'm asking for veterans' expertise here... The seller is a nice guy, but I don't want to bother him with this. I don't know if I'm used to 150cc single cylinder engine sounds or if my new pride and joy needs valve adjustment. It purrs like a kitten, but there is a subdued or mild flapping coming from the front/top. I'd prefer to get some input before I take it to a mechanic, I researched this forum and found at least one post indicating these engines are typically soundy even when in perfect tune.

Thanks.

these 350F's should purr too.
start coming to the realization that YOU can, and SHOULD, do all the work on your bike.
once that sets in, do the valve adjustment,  service the points/condensers and do a timing adjustment. change the oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, and clean your carbs.
if you get stuck, come here and ask.

Yep, do it all yourself.  That is the only way to know it has been done right.  Even small inconsistencies will make these engines sound like they are headed for the graveyard, but that also means it only takes a minor fix to make it the insatiable speed demon and handling magi that you dreamed about as a boy... before you discovered the lingerie section of the JC Penny's catalog.

Search the site for cam chain adjustment, too. It can make a rattle.

...but in does not run smooth - like all old SOCH4 -until all this work mentioned is done - AND you have had your carbs synchronised as the FINAL job.....Only then your engine settles down with a satisfied smooth sound.

The CB 350 F is a very cool bike to ride, love it when you give it throttle on revs from 5-6000 and up, it is build for it! Rode mine yesterday and I was simply smiling ;)
