Road America Vintage Motorcycle Classic, June 11-13, 2010
« on: December 10, 2009, 07:01:40 AM »
Press release from AHRMA and Road America regarding next summer's vintage festival:

Road America Expands Vintage Motorcycle Weekend

Elkhart Lake, Wis., December 9, 2009

Road America is adding new event features to its annual vintage motorcycle weekend.

The Road America Vintage Motorcycle Classic, June 11-13, 2010, will mark the return of the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) with the addition of motocross and cross country and trials on courses built specifically for vintage racing.

“Road America is acknowledged as a world-class road racing facility. When we discovered that the property had hundreds of acres of prime off-road terrain, we were pleased to add AHRMA National Off-Road events to the traditional schedule of road racing,” said AHRMA Executive Director David Lamberth. Road America has a large motorcycle racing fan base and always encourages vintage motorsports enthusiasm. Track president George Bruggenthies is pleased with the expanded event, “The world of vintage motorcycling is a vibrant, diverse family that includes, collectors, restorers and enthusiasts who just love to ride old bikes, as well as racers. Road America is a great place to celebrate that spirit,” he stated.

Other race-weekend features are being added through a partnership with longtime motorcycle events producer Will Stoner. Stoner is coordinating a swap meet, club corrals and a moving bike show. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to do a swap meet and bike show in such a fantastic location. The swap meet area is one of the best I’ve seen, the roads are fantastic and Wisconsin hospitality is great,” Stoner said. The swap meet is open to all brands of motorcycles, but is limited to bikes, parts, memorabilia and tools.

The on-site bike show will include judging with awards presented in 13 classes and a leisurely 40-mile ride through the scenic Wisconsin countryside. Club Corrals will be open to all vintage motorcycle clubs and organizations wishing to have a corral spot on Club Row. The spaces will be free to any club that registers by June 2, 2010. Clubs will be able to park their bikes, sell memberships and club regalia, as well as have a picnic for club members. Participants only need to purchase an advance event ticket to use the Club Corrals.

Participant information for the swap meet, bike show and club corral is available by contacting Will Stoner: 440-591-5099, willstoner@classicswapmeets.com. Other event details will be posted as they become available, at www.roadamerica.com.

Road America is a 640-acre, year-round motorsports facility entering its 55th race season. In addition to major race events, Road America offers motorcycle and supermoto schools, corporate ATV and karting programs, and top-of-the-line hospitality. Season Passes, which include the event listed above, are $370 through Feb. 15, 2010. For up-to-date event information visit www.roadamerica.com or call 800/365-7223.

SWEEEEEET!!!!!!!

I went to the ahrma races there this year for the first time and had a blast. I was toying with the idea of camping there the whole weekend in 2010. Now they want to turn it into a show and swap meet too!! AWESOME!!!

Road ATL is 14 miles from my shop.  I am putting this on the calender!

Er....This is at Road America.  The track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.  I'm guessing it's more than 14 miles from your shop.

Bob, Thanks for posting this event!  I am still challenged by the computer but have the press release from Will.  I hope to somehow offer some assistance for the ride and the swapmeet.  I live about 10 miles from the track and have been pushing to grow this event into a larger venue.

A grounds space will be available to all registered clubs.  Members with advance tickets are welcome to park at the club gathering. Hopefully one or more of the members that were at the Mid-Ohio event can bring the signs and banners. We would also be allowed to sell club shirts. If any club members want to meet at my place to ride in together, let me know.  Camping is available on the RA grounds.  Swap meet vendors will camp on-site.  Hotels are available from modest to high-end resorts in Elkhart Lake. OR.........you are welcome to pitch your tent or park your van at my place.

BTW......there will be several CB750s on the track!  The swap meet should offer a lot of bargains.  I already know that several 350 - 500 - 550 - 650 - 750 - 750A & 750F models will be offered as projects or complete bikes.

All this building anticipation isn't good... it's not even 2010 yet! Might have to take you up on the camping thing Scrambler.

I was thinking yesterday and I'm not so sure how big an event this will be. The reason I say that is, unless ticket prices go down, I can think of a few people that would love to attend for the show and swap meet but certainly won't pay $30 a day for it. How do they do it for the other big venues like Barber?

Last year I think tickets were $25 / day or $50 for 3-days.......plus camping.  If you also attend the previous weekend's AMA race events, you could get an advance ticket at $100 for the entire week.  I have worked with the Road America staff in the past and they have offered 10% discounts for advance-ticket group sales.  If you book a swap-space, you usually get camping privaleges in the swap space (your tent, van, trailer).

The info for 2010 is not yet on the internet sites. You may also be elegible for Staff Passess if you volunteer some time to help with the event.  Will Stoner is looking for bike show judges, swap-meet management, and bike-ride assistance.  I hope to have more info in a few weeks.

The pits are open to all spectators.......See Big Bob!  See Big Bob Go!  See Big Bob Win!  Take a picture of Big Bob and his CB750!  Meet Big Bob's Wife!  Or you could just drival on all of the other race bikes!

It's pretty unlikely that I'll be winning anything.  Not unless I can scrape up the cash for one of those M3 Racing firebreathers.

But I will bring The World's Ugliest Sandcast as my pit bike.

And my wife will be in attendance.  She is substiantially better looking than my Sandcast.

To paraphrase something that was often said about another friend of mine: No matter how much I try I still love Dave Stuebe.  Just talked to him last week.

In other news: We had a small booth set up for the Road America Vintage Classic this past week at the Chicago International Motorcycle Show.  I got a bunch of AHRMA racers and racing fans to staff the thing, all coordinated by Will Stoner.  I had my CB 750 Production Class racer on display as well as the RD 350 based #19 Formula bike owned by Karsten Iilg of FrameCrafters.

We had a TON of people come by the booth.  Handed out lots of flyers.  There were a lot of people who knew nothing about the event, they are all now much better informed.

This thing is going to be AWESOME.

Glad to hear it! It would be neat if they could make a TV comercial or something.

Way to go Bob!  I have been sending emails to various 'clubs' and am getting very positive feedback. The local AMCA chapter is trying to get its act together for a club presentation of vintage American iron. I am still trying to get some response from the British Bikers Cooperative and the local BMW clubs. I will be working with the VJMC for a club display and am open to help with anything the SOHC/4 group might plan for a gathering or display.  I have the MOTORCYCLE CLASSICS magazine rider route all planned and will map it with GPS when it warms up.

Update.......I met with Will Stoner at Road America today.  Will tells me that no one has contacted him about a club space at Road America for June 11-13.  I looked at the potential club spaces with Will and each space will be 30 feet wide by 60 or more feet in depth.  If more space is required he needs to know.  The space is free as long as someone buys an advance ticket for the weekend to man the space.  Also, it will only cost $15 for anyone that plans to camp in the club space, maybe for security reasons.  No shelters are provided.  I may be able to arrange for one or two canopies.  I am already involved with the VJMC club space and the MOTORCYCLE CLASSICS magazine show and ride...........so who want's to step forward for the SOHC/4?

I live a few minutes from Road America so could provide an overnight or two.

Its getting closer...........All SOHC/4 members are invited to visit the VJMC club corral at the north infield entrance tunnel. If no one else will register for a club space, then I will fly a banner if someone will forward it to me. CYCLE-X will be in the swapmeet directly across from the VJMC corral and KOS plans to talk shop around a few beers. If you get a camping pass, you may join my group permit.  Go to www.roadamerica.com for details
