'80 Coils in a 74?
« on: April 25, 2005, 06:55:54 PM »
just checking, because IIRC, this may already be answered...but, are
coils from an 80 750 (which are nice because you can replace the plug wires
rather than on the earlier ones which were moulded in place...) able to
be dropped in to a 74?

Thanks....:)  Just won a set off the 'bay..so, if not...will be sending them
out to someone here....:)

I have heard of some people doing this.
The nice thing about them as you say is that the wires can be replaced. The primary impedance however is lower (than stock), and this results in a higher current flow. If you have been having a problem keeping your battery charged this certainly won't help.
Also since the current is higher, if you have contact points they must handle a significantly higher load. If you are not having problems keeping your battery charged, why not give them a try? What's the worst that can happen? A dead battery and a worn set of points?
They do work better with electronic ignitions!

That's what the dyna ignition set I have sitting in the box is for...:)

Yeah, I could go with the accel or dyna coils, but, figure, keep it a bit
stock appearance...
