I picked up a black bomber today!
« on: May 16, 2010, 03:19:32 PM »
::) Sorry, but those were the first words I thought about when I looked at it...  yuck.  Supposedly runs, PO had the carbs off to clean.  Last registered in 2009.  Cost me my CB175 along with a CB350F motor and frame I had laying around.  He said he put lowering shocks on the rear and I see the fork tubes are down (or up?) about an inch in the clamp.  Made it sit (dangerously in my opinion) upright on the kickstand.  Any ideas on getting the black off?  I'm thinking oven cleaner...  It's flaking in places, can't be all that durable of a finish...  Odd ball coils too I noticed...  I'll probably just try to clean it up at this point without doing a complete disassembly.  I already have a 550K in a million pieces in my garage...

edit:  I should have identified the bike:  CB750K3

Looks like a good project bike. Not sure what oven cleaner will do, get the grease off for sure.
I would try acetone or thinner.

More photos.  Almost looks like the idea was to paint everything black that wasn't supposed to be black...  and those guages, one of them definitely wrong...

edit:  yeah, no luck with the oven cleaner.  Or this stuff that is supposed to remove graffiti either.  Do the control wires run through the handlebars on these?  And the front fender, no holes for a front stay...   odd..

Yes, on the 550F, the wiring runs through the bars. No frt stay, you don't need it and I think it looks better.

Looks like a few parts from other years.......later front fender.........K4 speedo.........the Accell wires and coil indicate you may have electronic ignition.......and the added motor dress typically signals some internal engine work.....maybe an 836 kit.......or..........maybe just for looks.

had the points cover off, didn't really see anything special there.  Would like to get original (K3) parts back on it too.  Looks like I'll have a busy summer...

Haven't bought any in a year or so, but wal-mart has a spray on paint stripper that works real well.
Sorry I don't have more info, but if they still have it, it should be easy to find.
Just spray it on and let it set for 15 minutes or so and you will see the paint start to bubble.
Rinse off and re apply to any paint that is still left.
