Very nicely put, and with just the right hint of respect for the deceased. I liked it. I shall be following this ~~abomina~~ project with keen interest.

Oh, and be sure to keep posting the excellent pics so we can all weep over every little cut and weld; just the shot of the fender alone was good for three tissues...

Ok, I got into the forks because I wanted to lose those accordion gator boots and the bulky chrome headlight ears.
I didn't like what I saw.

And this hex bolt alone took me about 30 minutes to get out, each!

I'm slowly catching you all up on work from a couple weeks ago, so....here are my new forks going together with CycleX tubes, All Balls seal, and Progressive springs. I don't have any pics

but I repalced my steering bearings with All Balls while I had everything apart.

More progress. Undid the gauges so I could clean some haze off the inside, and, since they were apart I thought why not paint them?

I love this color! I use it every chance I get.

I'm real happy with the results. Having a lighter color gauge seems to lighten up the look of the front end...or maybe that's just because I dont have the headlight bucket on?

Cover your eyes purists! After the gauges were back together I cut the frame just past the shock mounts. I'll be using a led array from Custom Dynamics mounted to a rail I need to fabricate.

Decided to turn and drill my rotor with the help of the guy here on the services offered page. My fingernail could make faint scratchy noises on the original rotor surface. I am very pleased with the job he did for me. I wanted the middle portion to be silver, instead of black, so here I painted it.

Also, here are the new cush rubbers. If you had to pay 12 bucks a piece for these you'd be taking pictures too! Also, I laced SS spokes from Buchanan's. Turn out this knowledgeable shop is also friendly and 10 minutes from my house. I bought the spokes, laced the wheels, and will take them back to be trued.

On to a couple more pics.

The LED light from Custom Dynamics is all I plan to run. Its 6 amber blinker lights on each side and 12 red in the middle. Plus the Back Off brake flasher.

Also, I'll be painting my tank, side covers, headlight bucket, and front fender. Here is the prep on the tank and side covers. Bondo in low spots, two dents, and the emblem mounts. Green is self-etching primer, grey is high build sandable primer.... and sand it I did!

Ahhh, finally. Last weekend I took Friday off and went to my old man's house to do the painting. He has a bigger garage and better compressor.

I like it and to all the purists out there I haven't seen anything hacked up that can't be bought on eBay for $15 bucks... well aside from the frame ends to fit the new seat. Lets face it I appreciate a bone stock survivor but ya gotta admit the stock rear seat and taillight assembly on our bikes in my opinion is pretty god awful ugly and dated.

Excellent work!

That bike of yours you started with was a beautiful bike but it was "YOUR" bike. It was not a piece at the Smithsonian so do what you want to with it! I get so tired of people sitting high and mighty on a web site.

It is obvious to me you have solid plans for this bike and do quality work. Keep it up.

Join the club I am funding my dual disc air fork upgrade with the stock parts off my 75. I'll most likely make a profit if my stuff sells for what I've been seeing them go for.

Really a great looking job, Interesting that the original photos show a bike that looks in good shape, but the pics of individual parts almost look to be a different bike, break it down into components and all the warts show up. LOL, I like the colors wish I could paint as well.

Nice work...As an industrial Designer I get a kick out of seeing a project spark so much emotion from both sides. My 550 wasnt a well running bike the previous owner rattle canned the hell out of it and rusty bits top to bottom all I heard was "restore!" "restore!" not from this forum though its all been positive feedback

... but to my point. you have to look at it, you have to ride it, all in all do your thing.
