Starter gear and Stator Cover assembly question...

Folks,

 I'm in the process of re-assembling the stator cover back onto my engine.  My question has to do with the gear assembly that engages the starter motor gear to the 'Starter Clutch Gear'.

 I assembled the parts just as the attached fische shows... the Starter Gear Setting plate is on the side of the gear closest to the outer cover (reduction gear, then the setting plate).  That's my first question... did I place these two parts on the gear shaft in the correct order?  I believe I did.

 Then next... How does the reduction gear work?  It would seem to me that it always appears to be 'engaged' into the starter clutch gear.  Will the starter motor be turning all time that the engine is running?  Possibly the fact that it is called a Starter Clutch Gear has something to do with engaging the gear only while the starter motor is actually being use.

 I just want to be sure I have these parts back correctly and that they work once I push my starter button!

Judging by the fiche, I am assuming we're talking about a 750 here.

Yes, the Starter Gear Setting plate (also known as a big washer) goes on the "outside" of that little gear.

And

Yes, the gears are always meshed. The starter clutch assembly is behind the rotor and the big gear free rotates in one direction and locks in place in the other. This way it locks the starter when starting the engine and then not enough friction to spin the starter then the engine is running.

Sounds like you have it set up right.

Here is a visual for you. Plus, if you want to keep from getting a potential oil leak in the future, put some sealant on the rubber grommet gasket for the stator wires. Click pic to enlarge...

 Nice Pics, Thanks.

 How much oil is actually contained within the area that contains the stator coils?  Is this really a wet area?

 I have been using new gaskets and a gasket sealer during cover installation.  I coat both sides of the gaskets.  The new stainless allen head screws look great on the covers.  I've been using an anti-seize compound on the screws during re-assembly.

Its not a lot of oil but its in constant motion coming in, getting slung around and draining out the bottom to the sump. The gasket can be used over if its whole and you like taking a chance, I've done it successfully. A little gasket sealer and as said on the rubber grommet is warranted.

If you just put the sealer on the cover side, not on the engine side, you can usually take the cover off with the gasket remaining intact.

It can leak terribly, if that's what you're asking.
