Anyone a appliance repairman?
« on: April 24, 2010, 09:43:20 AM »
I own a Kenmore HE clothes washer mod# 417.43142200. When I wash in the Reg Permanent Press/ Eco Cycle, the washer will not cycle past the rinse mode unless I shut it off, turn the knob a "hair" and turn it back on. It then continues and finishes the load. I believe this means the timer is bad, but don't want to just throw parts at it. It only happens on that Eco Cycle wash option. All other options ie Heavy dutie, gentle, short wash etc.... work just fine. It adds water for the rinse cycle, bumps it out then re adds water to the rinse cycle, bumps it out etc........Does this sound like a problem with the timer?. I can get a timer for $113 from Sears and the repair manual I can find online to help with the fix.

Sounds like there is a sensor interlock that is not allowing the "Timer" to continue. The timer is actually a mechanical or electronic (depending on the year, make and model) sequencer. And the sequence will not continue in less all the conditions are in order for that particular function.

I'm not an appliance repairman or tech. Just an Electronic Engineer...

I would suggest that you check all the supporting sensors and inputs first.

I am not sure how yours is built. I bought new timer for mine a few years back from Sears for a lot of money. After I replaced it I took the old one apart to see what make it tick. I found breaker points in there, some were burned. With some sandpaper I could have set it right.

If it's new it maybe under warrenty still, I would call the store u got it at and have them get ahold of the people who do the warrenty work for kenmore, I know when James and I were at home deopt the other day a lady was having an issue with maytag with the same problem, so if it is brand new or at leat a year or so old call the store u got it from and have them get ahold of the company that does warrenty work. I know that if u got it at home depot they have all that info onfile and will call them and give them your name and # so the repair company can call and make an appointment out to fix it, Don't know if sears is like that but they very well may. Give it a shot and see what happens. ;) Good Luck hope you can fix it soon.

I was an old time appliance tech and if the appliance is of a certain age I can help and because I worked on all brands, if it was under warranty then I'd worry about Mod & Ser # but the rest of the time it was how old was ii and who made it. So how old is it?

How handy are you? If it was me I'd pop the timer and see if it was like the one that Bobby was talking about, if it was then I'd pull the cover on the timer, usually the cover is on the side and then grab the points file and the non greasy contact cleaner, look for the set of points that had burnt marks on them and dress them and spray them, after that take a piece of paper and slip it between the points and slide it back and forth until it was clean, respray let dry put back together and try it, the other thing is a ball point pen plastic ink tube with out ink and the nib removed makes a decent insulated probe obviously if you push on the right set of contacts and it starts working you've found the problem, But if you're not comfortable around live electrical parts DON'T DO IT repeat DO NOT DO IT the possibility that you Zap your self for a washer repair is stupid and embarrassing. The other thing to remember is it's going on 2100 (9 local time and I've sucked back a little Rum to kill the pain) and what I've described as a fix, worked for me but it is dangerous and may not be worth it. Talk to me when I'm straight, if your determined and I'll walk you through it.
