ITS ALIVE!!!! ....Rode it today!
« on: January 17, 2006, 05:24:14 PM »
Took the ignition switch in to work today and had it re-wired.......without 4 splices in it.  ::) Stopped and got a set of new plugs, gapped them to .025, hooked up the old car battery to it with jumper cables, and it started on the 3rd try ;D ;D ;D

Still jumping the terminals on the solenoid. Now that I know it runs........I'll dig into the starter button circuit and try and find out what the deal with it is.

 I think I got a deal for $200  ;D

I did have one scare......and a BIG one. When I got it I checked the condition of the oil before I tried to start it. What was in the reservoir looked fairly new but it was barely touching the dipstick. So I added some to bring it up to within the marks. After I had ran the bike a little.......enough to be able to take the choke off and it would idle....I looked down and there was a puddle of oil growing like mad underneath. I just knew a seal or something had let go. :'( After shutting it down I went around to the right side of the bike and saw that it had come from the reservoir overflow. And now the reservoir is slap full.

I remember seeing a post about that last night. That would be bad if it did that while riding........Instant oil slick :o

Anyway........Im more excited than a bus full of fat women on the way to see the Ricky Martin  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D   ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D ;D

Nothing like getting your new bike running for the first time.

Hopefully within a week or 2. I had already bought some Clubmans and fairing for my Kawasaki so Im gonna swap those over, since the Kawa is a long way from getting on the road. I still need to find a seat/pod,turn signals, tailight, etc, etc. for the Honda. The guy I bought it from said he would paint the tank for me. He works in the paint shop where I work. He painted the side covers a wild shade of purple.....almost looks like a pearl. I might have him do the tank purple also. I'll post a pic of the color in a bit for some feedback. Also have to take the headers off to blast and paint them.

Since it sat for about a year, the clutch is stuck so Im getting ready to go out and see if I can free it up. I found that out after I had it running. Figured I would pull the clutch, put it in gear and see what happened. Well it lurched forward and stalled. Im gonna try the trick of putting it in gear and rocking it to see if it will come loose.  I hope thats what it is anyway and not something worse. The man that the PO bought it from rode it to his house when he sold it to him so maybe I'll get lucky.

Its amazing what bad stuff happens to a bike when it sets for a period of time.

I also have to trace down the wiring problem on the starter button....which brings up a question.

Where is the safety switch that ties in with the clutch? I see the wires coming from the clutch lever, but it doesnt look like there is enough room in the lever bracket(where the wires go in) for a switch. Or is there? I didnt know it had a safety switch on the clutch. When I found out I was hoping to go out, pull the clutch, hit the starter button and it would turn over. But it didnt. So I guess its either the safety switch, starter button, starter solenoid, or wiring.

I made a new remote bracket for the ignition switch yesterday at work. The one that is on the bike has it off to the right side of the handlebar clamp. My buddy that has the 74 put his switch back under the tank so he gave me his old bracket which centered the switch under both handlebar clamps. Its chrome and Im not gonna put that much chrome on the bike, so I used it as a pattern to make one out of aluminum Treadplate, then I painted it black. Looks pretty good. Will take some pics in a little bit. I would like to put the switch back under the tank also but the bracket is gone off of the frame. Was it welded/tacked? Or did the 76 models have the switch on the handlebar clamp?

Re: ITS ALIVE!!!!... switch mount pics and color of side covers

Heres a few pics of the side covers. Doesnt really do the color justice as it looks better in person. Its a purple pearl.

Switch mount I made today. Not sure if I like it yet. Might just powder coat the original black and put it back on.

Took the right hand control off and checked out the starter button. Everything looked OK.  ??? I did get the clutch unstuck. Put it in 3rd or 4th gear and pushed a little and it started working. Now if it isnt in too bad of shape from being in that condition, it wont be long till its on the road. All I have in it so far is $220 for the bike, a set of spark plugs, a couple cans of degreaser, and some electrical contact cleaner.

Rode the beast today!!!! ;D Well......in the yard and driveway. Took the seat off of my Kawa and set it on the frame. Too bad the hinges are on the wrong side......it would look good on there.

At least I found out that the tranny shifts.....into 2nd anyway....not enough room to stretch its legs, and the clutch grabs good with no slippage.

Lets see.........whats next..........  ;D  ;D  ;D

Ha!  You probably read my post!!!!  I had the same problem, my bike wet sumps, and I added a bunch of oil while my bike was getting a brand new paint job!  The first time out on it, the oil from the crank case filled up the resovoir and spilled out the overflow tube, RIGHT on my rear wheel.  Good thing the bike spun out when I was making a left turn at a stop sign, I was going slow enough to put my feet down and hold the bike up, while I hopped along with the bike for a few feet!

Since then, I re-routed the tube, and fixed my sump issues.  I knew my buddies weren't going to believe me when I told them I wiped out the first day after getting a new paint job.

Congrats man!

That seat looks good on their, seems to have plenty of room to put a nice sized
taillight under the back of it, and fill that space up with...
