CB550F Fork Tube Question

got the forks off. in the vise, and boot off. pulled the snap ring... now that 6mm inverted hex bolt just spins... im going through the service manual. appears i am missing the spring seat cushion and lock nut (if that makes sense). that is , unless they are still in there.

do you have to stick something down the tube to stop that nut or what?

any help would be appreciated

I didn't think that bolt just spinning meant something was missing.  You can try compressing the spring inside the tube to hold the part that the bolt goes into to keep it from spinning.  This has a pretty good writeup.  Talks about this specifically right at the bottom of the page:

i just misread. i thought the spring seat was supposed to come out with the spring...
got it handled and the caliper on the front... now just wishing i had a brake bleeder
