HD studs in F2 engine
« on: April 25, 2010, 03:27:36 AM »
Hey guys, need some help here.

First time working with a F2 ('78) engine. Use to K2-K6 engines. When installing the HD studs cannot use the 4 o-rings(size 5.5x3) that are on the studs next to the oil return studs. #6 item on picture. The older engines do not have them.

Should I look for replacements or can I drop them?

Thanks, Rob

i didnt bother with them , in fact when i striped the engine  they were not there , i spoke to the previous owner and he told me the engine had never been apart . having seen that picture i was slightly concerned about oil leaks but its done 20,000 miles since then with no problems , did your engine have the o rings rob?

Hey Simon,

Yes, it did. But it wonders me what the function is of the rings. Think to avoid oil creeping up.

Thanks for your info,

Rob

Both my '78K and '77F had them. I think my '77F Bike-in-a-box had them too. The F has an 836 kit though, so that might not be any indication. The K, however, is different. I am the documented third owner, and from what I saw, I am the only one to ever get in the engine, so they are "Fuctory" as a mechanic friend of mine would say.

Hey Simon,

Found o-rings in my shop, both Ø7x2 and Ø8x2. Using the Ø7x2 fills up the taper of the block and doesn't interfere with the basegasket. The Ø8 are a bid 'sloppy' around the studs.
Will let you know how it works once I mounted and started the engine.

Cheers, mate.

Hey Rob, did you ever have any oil leaks? Getting ready to assemble my 836 and F3 head and wondering about those o-rings.

Hey BWJ,

No oilleaks what so ever. Engine as dry as the clutch it has. ;)

Cheers, Rob
