how many out there?
« on: January 27, 2006, 02:44:44 AM »
Does anybody have any idea how many of these old bikes are still on the road? I live in pa. and almost never see these old bikes.

Good question, I have never seen a definitive answer, obviously!!
I am trying to establish a UK 'register', I know of about 100 people/bikes currently, but I am sure there are thousands of the early CBs around in the UK.

You are right, when I go out on mine I never see an old CB.If I park somewhere it will get more attention than the new bikes, nice. Dannie

Yeah, it's the same here in Texas. You never see a SOHC around here, except maybe 1 in 10,000 in chopper form. I have a 90's era Nighthawk 750 and I never see one of those either. It's strange. You know Honda sold tens of thousands of those things, where are they?javascript:void(0);

Many are in pieces or left to rot in carports and garages. In about 2 weeks I found one sitting neglected for 12 years in a carport and 5 others in various stages of disrepair and robbed for parts, mainly K3's and newer. I managed to snag two of these for my next project. There's not many left on the road around here (Vancouver Island) but good ones draw a crowd like bees to honey. It seems anybody in the middle-aged bracket wanted one, had one or knew someone that had one.

The only Thing I can come up with would be to find out how many of each type that the SOHC4
members have and, while that would be only a portion, that would give you kind of an idea at least.
Plus, it wouldn't cost anyone any thing to do this. Any other ideas? It would be interesting to me
      too.  Later on,  Bill

I suspect with the carbs these have, it's easier to just park them somewhere rather than attract attention by setting them on fire.

I have thought about putting out an add looking for these bikes where I live. Would be nice to get a bunch for cheap.

Just about every Sunday (spring to fall) there is a gathering of bikers at Marcus Dairy (Danbury, CT), usually there are 5 or 6 SOHC bikes (mostly 750's) there out of 500 or so regular visitors.

Mostly what I see in my area is H-D and Sport Bikes w/ a fewer number of cruisers and
Gold Wings. Once, about a year ago, I saw a Norton Commando (Mint!!), turned out to be a
"Fast Back" model. I never see any of the Old Hondas. As soon as get something going, I hope to
get it out and maybe it'll give others, in the area, to push to get em out and RIDE!!  Later on, Bill

Last summer i went on an 800miletrip through pa., on a 71 cb450 with a buch of brit bikers.  We had a 5 triumph t100'sfrom the70, 2 norton 750 comandos. They seemed generally impressed with the little 450.
I Still got my share of people stopping me and saying how much they liked the 450.

sooooo hard to tell, i know of several here in boulder.  of those, i've only met one of their owners.  a near mint yellow 400f... i drive by it all the time to drool.  in fact we used to live within a block of each other.  we always said we would ride someday and it has yet to happen.  makes it even harder to do so now that i've moved further away.

and, these sohc4's that i know of in boulder... i don't think any of them belong to this site

Don't know of any near me.  In fact, I'm willing to bet that I'm the only SOHC owner within at least a hundred miles.

There are some in Dallas, which is near my home in Texas, (I'm currently stationed in Louisiana), but none here and I've never seen one on the road back home.

Got my brother hooked on the SOHC Fours now and he's shopping for a mid-run K to turn into a Cafe Racer.  That'll be ONE in Fort Worth (where I'm from).

My soon to be father-in-law said he is interested in picking up a SOHC4 now that I have mine running half way decent.  He has a couple BMW bikes now

Forgot to mention, my Dad (former m/c mech.,rider and dealer) hadn't done anything with
motorcycles for a lot of yearsand then one day he was looking at my collection of project bikes.
He started hinting around. Well, I took a 76' CB400F down to him to fix up. Now, in addition to that,
    he's bought a 78' CB750A for $250. So, he's messing around with motorcycles again.  He's 80yrs old!

My brother in-law and I ride 750's in southeast ohio and we never see other sohc's. Did see one near Cambridge, Ohio last summer and gave the guy a thumbs up.

Other than Dan Jones' bike, I've seen one other parked in front of an auto parts place and I saw one parked in a driveway on the way home from Saline, MI, just south of Ann Arbor.

I see lots of sohc4's around Denver, not including the bikes at the monthly gathering.  Just saw a 550K parked on the street today while out looking at houses. ;D

You see quite a few around here in Philly.  It might be because like someone earlier said about garages - we don't have very many here.  Just in my neighborhood alone, I know of 3 right around my block.

Portland (OR) has a fair share of active SOHC.  Inexpensive to own and operate, a terrific alternative to the cost prohibitive Harley.
MrBlasty is keen on getting rides organized here in the City of Roses (weather permitting).
