Project Cocaine
« on: March 25, 2010, 01:39:16 AM »
Like any project, this started with a clear dream; a bike to base all future ideas off of.  Most will know the bike from the WM crew.

I had been scouring for a 750 for the past 4 years and it seemed as though there were none around at all.  The ones that were for sale were grossly overpriced.  I had stopped looking until a gem 1978 750F came up for sale in Regina.  Truckload of the bike and spares later the dream was reignited.

First was the teardown and selling of spare parts, most went but I tried to keep the critical bits.  The search for the basic parts such as front end, rims and tank / seat combo were major priorities.  Before I got too invested I figured it would be a good idea to have a clear and defined vision.  This is when the project started turning into a borderline obsession.

The rendering was based off of the WM design and with it being my first time using Adobe Illustrator so there are a few hours in the drawing.  Wasn’t too excited with the paint scheme so drew inspiration from a Yosh CR photo I modified some years ago.

To…

Was torn between CF and Aluminum for the tank and seat combo but eventually decided on an Aluminum combo for practicality.

Final rendering.  Once I had the general shape and idea for components it was off to the races.  I scoured my local junkyard for a similar swing arm to avoid the boxed stock F arm and not have to weld up a K variant.  Found one that looked the part from photos and CAD measurements.  The major difference was the pivot mounting bolt diameter and the added length over a stock arm.  New shock mounting ears are to added using ½ steel stock.  Took a trip down to Montana this evening to pick up most of the remaining parts, came back and had to test the stance out.  Forks are going to need to be lowered around 2" which won't be too much trouble.

Thanks, not really sure though as I pulled it out of a pile at the local wreckers.  It's around 19.5" from the pivot to the front of the axle loop.

I see from your final rendering a very sexy shape to the pipes...how will you achieve that vision? The pipes I've seen that match that shape seem to have been hand-bent yoshimura race-type exhaust, like the ones 736cc (I believe that's who it was...) was selling awhile back...

Thats the plan to run original Yosh style headers, if I can't find any down the road I'll get some made.

Anyone get a good deal on machining work?  Local guys want upwards of $250 for a new front axle and I think that's kind of high

Why do you need a new axle made?  The axle that those forks left the factory with won't do?

The aftermarket Harley 16" rim was almost 50% wider than that of the ZX11, I'm using a set of Harley wide-glide triples to compensate and get the wider front stance.
Edit: I don't think welding the stock Kawi axle would be such a good idea but I could go that route and run 3/4" bearings in the wheel

Sounds like a well thought out build, if you posted a sketch of the type axle you're thinking of maybe someone can help. I've got some stock and a small lathe, but I think what you need is beyond my capacity.

Well the stock ZX axle used a collar on the one side where the forks clamps.  I'm just going to track down another one, find some 3/4" or 1" 4140 steel rod and spin some threads on it to length.  Keep it simple.

Steering stem is a whole other beast in and of itself, Harley used a solid 1" stem over a tapered design.  Luckily the stem unbolts from the tree but the Honda one is about 2mm too small in diameter so it won't tighten right up.  Should have something figured out tomorrow

can you not make a press on sleeve that will make up the difference and will press onto the honda stem so that you can swap it into the harley triple?

Messed around with it for a few days and finally took it to a machine shop.  He brazed the lower portion then machined it down to get it to fit snug.  Don't want to half ass steering geometry.

Lack of updates due to work and this pig taking up my time off.  A previous owner was worried about it bottoming out so he put a 3-4" lift on it  ::).  It's no longer a donk.

Got the bike back on its wheels, need to make up the rear axle and some spacers for both the front and rear.  I broke a tap in the frame after when I was trying to mount up the new shocks, talk about a pain.  Eventually hammered / dremeled it out and stepped up to a M10.
