Gas tank emblem
« on: January 30, 2006, 09:32:24 AM »
As I ponder some color changes on my 550, (and my bike is not here for me to look at), my question is on how that metal "Honda" thingie is attached to the sides of the fuel tank. Is it glued on, or will I not be that lucky? Thanks in advance....

From an add for replacement ones:

"These emblems (badges) are attached with pins on the back of the emblems being pushed through cir-clips inserted into the slots on the gas tank. If your gas tank has been body filled and painted, the pins can be clipped off (the emblem metal is very soft) so the emblems can be attached with 2-sided automotive moulding tape available from any hardware store."

I've attached a picture of the alternator cover post & clip (post on right has the clip on it, post on the left is bare), which I think is the same thing.  I've naver had them off, so hopefully someone else will verify all of this.

They originally had a retaining clip, mine has had the pins broken as it is made of a very brittle plastic like substance, and mine is now glued on..

My 1978 CB550, when I bought it was missing the left side tank badge. I bought one on EBAY that matched for about 4 dollars. I then went to the Honda Dealer...They called them spring-clips and cost about a $1.25 each and had to be ordered. To pull the old emblems off for painting....use a wide blade of some sort and gently pry the badges off...most likely you might break a pin....they are soft. Hope this helped. DrMark

Real soft.  Be careful unless you're resigned to gluing them back on.  I broke one off the alternator cover and can't get the little bastard out.  And I can't glue this on like you can with the tank badge because there's screws under them.

Thanks, everyone! As always, you're very helpful, and I have a pretty clear idea for what I have to do.
