Starter, elecrtics somthing is wrong need help!
« on: April 18, 2010, 12:38:11 PM »
So I finally got my bike going after adjusting the points. After this i ran her around teh black and parked her and shut off the key. Then teh starter kept cranking for a couple seconds then when it stopped i went to turn the bike back on and nothing. The oil light doesnt turn on and neither does the headlamp. Check the fuses and they are fine, by passed the ignition switch and still nothing.

The p light will still turn on, any ideas are welcome, just need some sort of idea to fix it.

If the starter cranked AFTER you shut off the key, I would suspect your problems may be in the handle-bar mounted switches. How did you by-pass the ign sw? Also, what do you mean by the "p light"?
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I used a piece of wire and went black to red. and the parking light when you turn the ignition all the way right.

I suspect this could be the problem but it was late so everywhere was closed and no voltmeter. I was just thrown off of it cranking the starter after i shut it off.

I'm thinking maybe the start-button was stuck on, causing the starter motor to stay on, (and it may have been running when the engine was running, but you didn't hear it) and it ran the battery down. Anyway, get a meter and check your battery before you do anything else...

Did you find the problem?  I suspect your starter button may have imploded.  Open up the handlebar assembly and take a peek inside.  The switch is inside a plastic housing that eventually falls apart.  No start and no headlight is the most common symptom though you should be able to kick start it.  The only solution apart from some type of jury rigged set up is a new assembly for about $95.  I just did mine a few weeks ago.

Hey, yeah sorry ment to update, ive just been busy riding!

The starter button was stuck down, luckily it was just stuck, un stuck it and everything was ok, except the battery, got a new one and a charger and called it a day, shes running better then ever now. Going to do the timing and points again, this time the CORRECT way.

Then investing in a new spitfire front tire, seeing as mine is a bit dry rot, i only taker her on small trips, like to the grocery store 2 blocks away and school less then 1 mile away, never getting much above 40. I do eventually want to take her on a nice long ride after everything is fixed but dont want to wait to get the tire last.

Lastly I need to re-sync the carbs, ill be honest, yes I am sure I can learn to do this myself, but I dont really have the money to spend on a morgan carb tune. I have all the time in the world, but Just not the money to afford it, and yes I know I can get one for the same price as I am going to pay to have it done, but I might want to save myself a headache on this one.
