lost carb part
« on: April 26, 2010, 04:56:30 PM »
i just finished soaking all 4 carbs in carb cleaner and reassembled them.  i realized on the last carb that i am missing a small solid metal rod piece that is concave on both ends.  it fits in what is called the throttle slide arm assembly.  i went to crotchrocket.com and found the part and it says its not available.  any ideas on what i should do now?

i am a week or 2 from having this 550 on the road and losing a tiny part like this has me really frustrated.  i kept everything in egg crates and havent figured out how i lost it but thats water over the dam.

What model 550 carbs do you need the part for, and can you get a pic of the part.

Is it this?

If so, PM me.

If not, can you point us to a manual's photo/link?

Is it made of steel? If so, you might try fishing around in the can of carb cleaner that you soaked them in with a magnet.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Are you talking about the part that is spring loaded (when assembled) and is "grips" that ball in the throttle linkage (I am assuming your carbs are set up similar to a CB400F).

If so, I bet you could make the part easy enough.  Take some rod that will fit in the linkage, cut to size, and ise a ball grinder on a Dremel to shape the ends a bit (make them concave) to wrap around the ball in the linkage.  Use another one as a pattern.

The part in the pic posted looks like the spring mount.  Not the same part, I think.

theofam - nope.  those look like jets.

fastbroshi - no.

scottly - i put a rubber glove on my hand and felt around the bottom.  i couldnt feel anything in there.  and i did it for about a minute.

magconpres - yes, it is that one!  i think your suggestion sounds doable for me.  im going to give that a try.  thanks. (sometimes it just takes someone else suggesting something you never thought of).  i was hoping for a spare part from someone's incomplete carb.

now ill head over to a metal parts supplier that im sure will have a length of rod i'll need.  il have to buy at least 2 feet of it im sure just to make a 1/2" part.  maybe ill make a few extras.
