exhaust clamp springs
« on: April 27, 2010, 12:39:48 PM »
does anyone have any close up pics of how i could adapt some springs to my exhaust pipes?  i really like the look, and the functionality is nice too.  i was thinking of adding some stainless springs.  can i simply drill a hole in one of the cooling fins and call it a day??  thanks guys!!

By cooling fins, I am assuming that you are talking about running springs from the head to exhaust flange junction/union at the head?

I have always seen/done a rigid fastener mount at the head, and any subsequent sleeved unions were "sprung". Unless I am horribly out of date, I do not recall anyone relying on springs to anchor the exhaust directly to the head, I would estimate that you would run a 100% chance of leakage.

newer bikes use them as a way to keep connections fitted, and to keep the pipes fastened to the head.  like below, except with a spring from the head to the pipe

they also use the clamps to keep the pipes fixed to the head, but a combination helps.  plus i think it looks pretty neat!

Did you see the pic of Rossi's motogp setup at the end of this thread?   http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=69430.0
Uses the springs to hold the header sections together but the pipes are bolted to the head . . .
