As paulages mentioned a CB650 primary chain tensioner is a nice addition. Once installed you can see how much slack there is even with a new chain.

How is the 650 cam tensioner different than the 550 unit?

Hey hannibal, can you give me pictures of your tensioner addition when you get to it? I picked one of those up and want to see how it's done.

That makes sense... sort of. I'm having a hard time getting my head around what's happening there. It's all welded to the top half of the case then you need to run a deeper oil pan to make room.

Bwaller sent me a drawing I copied to make mine, but once I understood the orientation of the piece, the drawing wasn't really necessary. The hole for the bolt you can see the copper washer on (doesn't need to be copper, it was just what I had handy) is drilled and tapped into the corner of the case casting. The other is drilled in from the side of the top case, and drilled/tapped in the little piece. These two hold the mount in place, and the tensioner is mounted to it. The bolt that goes through the outside of the case needs a copper washer of course.

Did this build ever go anywhere?

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.
