What kinda paint are you using? And what's your "lazy man's pinstriping" process? I'm collecting info on painting...

I'm using Duplicolor Engine Enamel. That's what I've used on everything just to keep things uniform.

When it comes to traditional pinstriping, I am on par with Helen Keller and Stevie Wonder. I could pay someone to do it, but my money could could be spent better elsewhere on this bike. So, here's my Lazy Man's Pinstriping:

After priming, whatever color I want my striping to be, that's what color I lay down first. After the paint has cured, I use 1/8" masking tape to lay out my striping. Then I paint my other color over the tape. Remove the tape once the second color is dry to the touch and you have perfect lines.

I did this with my tank. 1/8" (or several other thicknesses for that matter) can be found at a decent hobby shop or a paint supply shop.

There is deffiantely nothing lazy about it!
You have to be able to see the finished paint job before you can even begin. It was the only way we could do a two-tone with color matched striping back in the late 70's, early 80's. I prefer using vinyl tape striping (common auto pinstripe tape) for doing multi-line striping. You can get down to 1/16" with it.

Your bike is going to look killer when you get it finished.

Laid the orange down last night. I have a few minor spots to touch up, but overall I am pleased. 2-part clear-coat is ordered and should get sprayed next week. I'll upload much better pictures then, but for now here's a teaser:

Tires... they're not too far down the road on the to-do list.

I want a vintage look, so I was leaning towards Avon Speedmaster up front, but I am not crazy about the matching rear for an 18" rim:

Coker has a Firestone rear that I like much more:

Or should I go with something more contemporary in the name of safety, like Metzler Lasertech:

Hey Digger. I've been pondering the same vintage tire look for my RD350. I like the Avon.

I may go with Bridgestone L303, but I need an 18" front, you prolly don't.

I like the Dunlop for the rear. If I was running a 16 instead of an 18, there would be a lot more out there for me.

That vintage avon up front with the zig zag treaded rear would look so perfect on your bike dude. I feel like that would just work so well. Also, your frame is just plain beautiful.

Thanks everyone. The paint was the easy part. All the prep work and molding leading up to it was the real pain.

Final assembly will begin shortly. I have a bunch of small stuff to blast and paint as I go, like fork lowers and brake calipers, but everything from here on out is no-frills gloss black.

Most of the people I've talked to who picked tires based on how old school they looked have told me that they regret it. Specifically those FireStone-alike Cokers...

I rock a set of Avon RoadMasters on my CBX, and I am very pleased with how they work, and not unhappy with the look.

+1, I know of a guy that have to have Firestones, 2 weeks after fitting them he had his mechanic take them off and throw them in the bin... I think Dave500 knows a guy thats currently doing the same thing....

I know it's been a while since I updated last. When you have two kids, a wife, and a full time job, you're blessed but you rarely have as much time as you thought you did.

Anyways, here's where it's at. Wiring is half done. Tank is mounted, front end is together, MOST of the sandblasting/painting is done. For the most part, we are down to final assembly. The wheels on the bike are not the ones that will be used. Those have been cleaned up and are waiting for new rubber. I am leaning towards the Avon Speedmaster front/ Safety Mark II rear. Brakes still have to be installed along with a bunch of other misc stuff.

I'm trying to dedicate at least an hour each night to getting her back together, even if it is just in time for winter.
