The fuel tank still had some rust in it, which clogged up the fuel filter. So I decided to take it to my local radiator shop and have it professionally cleaned and sealed. That should be done mid next week. Since it will be fuel free when I get it back, I will take the opportunity to paint it.

I got the anti-pod kit from Tintop! Unfortunately the voltage regulator needs to be moved before I can mount it. Where do I want to move it? To where the starter is. Where am I moving the starter? To the garage shelf.

I'm going to eliminate the starter since this engine kicks over so nicely. The regulator is going to be relocated to where the starter goes. This will get rid of a lot of wiring and the solenoid. Should tidy things up a bit.

Also while I have things apart, the carbs are very rich. When I got them, they had the throttle valve cutaway reduced to increase fuel in the 1/4 to 1/2 throttle range. They also have a washer under the needle clip (increases fuel in the same range), along with 125 main jets, which seem excessive for my setup. I don't know what setup the bike had that these came off, but I need to tone them down. So the washer will come out and 110's will go in. I'll keep the throttle slides with the cutaway mod though.

How are you making a plug for where the starter shaft goes? I have not heard how people are doing that yet.

I've taken another starter apart and kept the two aluminum ends. I knocked the bushing and seal out of the front end. At this point, it readily accepts a 1/2" npt pipe tap. I tapped it from the side that faces away from the hole in the engine block until a 1/2" pipe plug would seat flush. Using these two ends, I am going to make a bracket to connect the two ends which I will also mount the regulator to. The rear end will bolt to the engine block as usual and the starter cover will also serve to hold the top of the two ends together.

My crude illustration here should give an idea of the set-up. The blue is the bracket, gray end caps, gold bolts, and black regulator. Once the actual set-up is complete, I will take pictures. For now, I also have the end with the plug done, so here's two pics of that.

So it's been a busy week in the garage.

Pulled the starter out, along with the gear behind the alternator cover. Removed all the associated wiring and the solenoid. I wonder how much all that weighed! Relocated the voltage reg/rect to the starter hole. So now, instead of having a bunch of wires coming from the engine, I have only two! I love simplicity.

Made a new horizontal license plate bracket since Illinois doesn't approve of vertical. Also pulled the blue dot lens off for the time being and put on a regular one. I don't want anything to upset the guy who comes to inspect this bike.

Carbs got leaned out a bit. Reinstalled them along with Tintop's anti-pod filter set-up. That thing is sweet! I love how it purposefully fills the void that was in that area of the bike.

Tank is cleaned and sealed but will be getting painted before filling with fuel again. I just put it on the bike for photo purposes.

Waiting on a few documents, but the title application papers should get mailed out next week. Keeping fingers crossed!

I have no idea. I've only seen them on two other bikes ever. I know a few guys who would jump at the chance for some.

So I started painting the tank. Mind you, I am not a painter by any stretch. If nothing else, my goal is to lay out something half-ass decent and take the tank to a professional and say "I want it to look like this, just not #$%*ty."

Duplicolor rattle can is my M.O. Base coat of Hemi-Orange laid out. Then taping, then Daytona Yellow.

Don't judge until I'm done; you might like it. And BTW, the color is orange like the engine. I don't know why it's showing up red.

You would be surprised how good a job can be achieved by rattle cans. See how you go experimenting, you could save yourself a few dollars doing it yourself....

Yeah, I thought so. The frame is going to stay bare until I get it stamped. Then it will get some mild molding and paint as well.

So last night I taped off the yellow pinstripe using 1/8" masking tape and shot the tank with red. Tonight I laid out lace fabric on the tank and shot with black. Tomorrow I will take off the rest of the tape and shoot with clear. Check out the progress:

I will admit that I, personally, am sick of seeing skulls on custom paint jobs, so the lace is a refreshing choice. Don't know if it is the choice that I would have made, but I can't wait to see the finished product! I love seeing painting tricks like that. Well done!

Coffin tank, lace, I dig it. Seems spot on for the look you've got going.

I've thought about using the starter area for a battery on my long-dormant 550 build. My main concern is temperature. Does the voltage regulator need airflow to keep it cool/operable? If so, maybe Frankenstuff could build you a clear, louvered starter cover to match the points cover.

Hard to believe how far you've come from the original scoot!

The seat looks almost plush compared to a lot of the choppers; and the Bears orange is great. If you ever ride that thing around Terre Haute let me know. From the looks of things I may be able to hear it.
