I got a spare set of rotors drilled by ElCheapo that will go on the bike, but other than that, it's pretty much been on hold.  For some reason, the past few months have been insanely busy, it seems.  If I don't get to tearing it down soon, I won't have it back together for the riding season.  Better get my ass in gear!

Couple brackets to weld on, some others to cut off, sandblasting, molding, and painting.

Finally started tearing the bike down yesterday... only six months after I should have.

Finally FINISHED tearing the bike down Saturday... only four months after I should have.

This weekend I did manage to get a substantial amount done to the frame.  Kickstand has been relocated forward a few inches so that it is in a more natural and sturdier placement, but still clears the exhaust.

I decided to relocate the key-switch from the left side to the right side of the neck.  Originally, I wanted to be able to engage the starter with the key while turning the throttle at the same time (anticipating hard starting conditions).  However, this engine starts almost immediately every time and I have eliminated the starter.  What it doesn't like to do is find neutral easily at a stop.  So, instead of holding in the clutch and playing with the shifter for 5 minutes in front of the gas pumps, I will be able to hold in the clutch and just shut it off.  It drops in with no problem when not running.  I will be doing the clutch basket modification described in Hondaman's book, as I think this is insufficient oiling to the clutch.

Filling in the old key-switch hole on the left side was easy thanks to a tech article I read.  Basically, if you have a large hole to weld up and you don't want to weld a backing strip behind it, you place a piece of aluminum or brass behind the hole and use that for a backing as you weld your hole.  The weld will not stick to the aluminum or brass but still fills in nicely!

I still have to fab some brackets for passenger pegs, remove the drum-brake stay, and just do general clean-up on the frame before it's sent off for sand-blasting.

Hopefully my next update is much sooner than four months from now.  Thanks for staying interested!

Paint.  I can do it myself and I don't want anything to be shinier than the tank.  Orange with a little yellow pin-striping is the plan for now.

Wait...but it was done? I was on my way to take it for a whip.why paint? Wd40. I do like your approach to the shine factor. Tank. Done. Nice. Carry on soldier. Carry on.

Raw frames work on some bikes, but that's not what I see with this one.  I'm really going for the 70's here.  Probably going to switch back to points too so it's more period correct... and so it draws attention to that non-period correct killer points cover!

chop looks killer, can't wait to see the finished product. I'm glad you're not leaving it raw metal :D

Love the pipes, I build my own version of them, only the 2,3 pair runs in front of the 1,4 pair, and all pipes kinda converge just above the oil filter to form an X when viewed from the front.
I think there's a thread in high performance with some pics and maybe a video, so I won't hijack with my pics ;)

LOL... I gotta move my sidestand for the same reason, I can scrape footpegs and my hardbags on the right side, but the stand hits way earlier on the left... SUCKS when enjoying some lazy twistys in the country, and can only dig in on righthand curves.

That is dedication right there. If it was my bike, I'd just be rockin' it as-is. Good on you for doing it right!

Got the frame back from sandblasting on Wednesday.  If anybody in the Chicagoland area needs some blasting done, I got the guy for you.  $80 for the frame with less than 24 hour turnaround!  The frame looked awesome too!

Molding the frame began today.  I have never done this before, but I can tell you one thing:  if there is anything on this bike that is a labor of love, this is it.  Painstaking, tedious, laborious, but I know it will be worth it even if I am the only one who notices.  This will take me all of this week and probably the better part of next week.

Also today, I finally got my blasting cabinet up and running.  Soda works well at cleaning up engine mounts and triple trees so far!

I will say that I pay a lot more attention when I see custom bikes now and the appreciation I have for molded frames is immense.  It's definitely one of those "Devil's in the details" things.

I always, always look to see if stamped/welded/spot-welded bits of ugliness have been prettied up on frames.  I also look to see unused tabs cut off and smoothed, wires hidden, cables/lines routed smoothly, etc.  Of course, it's easy to be fussy about that up here in the cheap seats.  My hat's off to you for actually putting in the effort on your build!

The frame molding is still in process.  I've spent an hour or two every day so far on it.  I decided to enlist some help to speed things along.
