Jet o-ring idea
« on: April 28, 2010, 12:04:51 PM »
On the several sets of carbs I've needed to rebuild, the only part of those expensive kits I've ever really needed was the o-rings for the jets. On the last set I decided to try something out. I got the waxy-est dental floss I could find. The cheap store brand seemed to work best. I wrapped the floss very tightly around the jet in the o-ring groove. I built it up to just slightly wider than the jet. Pressed in, felt just as secure as with an o-ring. I feel confident, but will report back when I hit the road if there are any problems.

Just an idea!

will defo try this. i wasnt prepared to pay 10 pounds per carb for o rings from honda so i bought some plumbers ones and had to carefully shave them as they were too thick. i was considering trying PTFE tape next time they are out but not sure how well it does in petrol.

thanks!

The wax on floss is there as a lubricant so the floss slides more easily on the tooth surface.  It is likely a petroleum or synthetic wax (polymer), both of which will be soluble in gasoline.  As the floss loses the wax, its dimensions may shrink, and allow the main jet to draw fuel around the edges rather than through the orifice, thus upsetting mixture.  But I could be wrong, so good luck and let us know.  Don

And if you get the flavored floss, your exhaust will smell minty fresh.

A forum member, Kevin400F, sells an o-ring set for a good price.

Its a complete rubber bits for all 4 carbs. Very reasonable! Should be in FAQ section.!! But I dont think it is.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!
