77 cb550f dual disc
« on: May 02, 2010, 11:25:07 AM »
Im looking into a dual disc conversion for my cb550f.  I would like to replace as little as possible in the process...so I would like to use my current triple trees and still have a spoked front wheel.  My research here hasnt narrowed down much.  It does seem that swapping for a gl1000 front end is relatively straight forward, but they employ 37mm forks compared to my 35mm.

2 questions:

will I be able to modify my current front wheel for this?

if not, what are my options for dual disc swaps at 35mm with a spoked wheel?

thanks in advance!
Jeremy

(thread hijack in progress)
OK, me too.
I've got about 3 rotors laying around so why not.
I read the article but is the speedo drive 44641-300-000 stock on the 72 500 or will I need to fabricate one?
What is the size of the GL1000 MC? I've got a GL and I'm not taking anything off it  :)
There are some nice MCs on Mikes XS that I would rather look into if I knew the diameter needed.

The speedo drive required is VERY early 750 and no other so fabricate/modify the one you have. I know there are pictures of both early and later drive on here somewhere. SOME later front hubs do not have the two drive flats required which does complicate things slightly as thay have to be machined on as well

You can grind down the speedo plate to fit with stock drive, I can post pics of my 78 if you need em.

that would be great! I've been all over the search function, and read through many threads but I'm still not sure what to modify, or how. Sometimes I'm just a bit slow like that.

Jeremy, the simplest thing to do is get an extra rotor and caliper. Modify what mr_matt is going to show us. Get a double banjo bolt to accomodate 2 brake lines, and a different master cylinder.
The GL1000 front end swap is good, but not great. Also finding one in good shape is hard.
