1936 Bugatti sells for a record amount at an auction on Wednesday.

The rare Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic was sold to an undisclosed buyer, according to the auction house that sold it.

The auction house, Gooding & Company, wouldn't disclose the sale price but it's believed to have sold for between $30 million and $40 million. A new record.

The buyer, Gooding says, is "a devoted connoisseur who will become the guardian of this treasured piece of automotive history."

The Bugatti 57SC Atlantic was owned previously by the trust of the late Dr. Peter Williamson, a neurosurgeon and car collector. The vehicle was the first of just three Atlantics built.

The buyer joins designer Ralph Lauren as the only two owners of these extremely rare automobiles.

While I love all things wheeled, that doesn't rotate my crank. But someone ("a devoted connoisseur who will become the guardian of this treasured piece of automotive history") certainly loves them. Hats off.

   That's me too. I enjoy seeing those oldies, but they aren't what I would be after either.
 I agree, those who CAN and DO Buy Those Old ones like THAT, are cool in MY book, but Not really my style either. Granted, there ARE some of the OLDER cars that float MY boat, but MY mainstream would be more in the 50's and 60's Mopars and wouldn't ALL have to be Hemi cars, I'd accept 340 6pks, 440 6pks, $13 and 440 Dual Quads as well.   Oh, and maybe an occasional V-10.

And that's waht makes it great. There's something for many different tastes. I love to see the perfectly restored (in most cases overrestored) rolling art at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. However there is very little that I would actually want to own. Guess a basic meat and potatoes type person just doesn't appreciate caviar.

          You are right, and I just barely know how to SPELL caviar, much less have the taste for it.

Not sure  bucky katt actually wants the car, just wishes he had the money to be able to buy stuff for that amount.
I kind of wish I did to.
How much money would you have, if you could afford to spend that much on one item?
Don't think the guy dropped his last 40 mil to buy that car.

Are you kidding? The buyer probably financed it through his company
and is deducting the interest as a business expense.

   I've always admired the Cord myself (the others are cool and all, but the cord is my thought) The "Coffin" style hood with those exhaust tubes coming out of the side.

Yeah but you guys have to think about it it's not something that you hop into to go around the block first you have to heat the engine, then the coolant, then the oil must be heated to the proper temp and added gently to the machine before you fire it up, seems to me a certain sense of spontaneity is lost in other words you have to buggy to drive a "Bug".

Yeah but you guys have to think about it it's not something that you hop into to go around the block first you have to heat the engine, then the coolant, then the oil must be heated to the proper temp and added gently to the machine before you fire it up, seems to me a certain sense of spontaneity is lost in other words you have to buggy to drive a "Bug".

But that's what makes the journey worthwhile. These are pure toys (well the ones that are actually used) and having one means you have the time to do the prep to enjoy the trip. They are not daily transportation. And today's perfectly running antiseptic generic vehicles have become soulless in the quest for driver comfort. While I dearly love the old Mopars I have, in stock configuration, they give crappy mileage, puke next to raw gas out of the pipes, handle like water buffaloes on roller skates, stop on six dimes and three quarters and shake like washing machine. This is in comparison to a new vehicle. They can be made to handle and steer very decently, and upgrading the brakes to the cop spec versions is a must (right Bill?). But again these are not used as transportation devices, but entertainment. So the sacrifice of convenience is more than repaid by the fun derived.
 Plus a good jump on the loud pedal is narcotic.

It is a cool looking old car no doubt. Saw a documentary about Ralph Lauren's collection that included one of these.
But at $40 million I'd be scared to take it on the road. What if you got in a wreck!?

IMHO caviar tastes like salty fish eggs! Blechh!!
