Purpose of throttle lock knob?
« on: May 03, 2010, 07:51:03 AM »
What's the purpose of the knob on the RH control that clamps down on the throttle? I don't see it mentioned anywhere in my manual.

The purpose of the throttle lock knob is to lock the throttle  ;D

Seriously, I think it's basically there to increase tension on the throttle so it requires less force to hold in position over long periods of time.  Think of it as poor-man's cruise control.

I'd skip it.  For long trips I have a wrist saver that goes on my grip and allows my palm to help hold the throttle in place.

It's not a throttle lock, it's a friction adjuster and it's designed to control how much force it takes to hold the throttle in a given position.

When properly lubed and adjusted, the throttle should be easy to turn but will take almost no force at all to keep in position.

It should never be adjusted tight enough to act as a "cruise control".  Get an actual VistaCruise or throttle boss for that or something.

Don't loose the friction spring inside that's shaped like a bent "U", replacing them is a hassle these days.

Later bikes omitted these as a cost-savings measure I suspect.  750's had them in K0 and K1, not sure if K2's had them.

I'd keep it if you already have it, just make sure it's greased and properly adjusted.  Mine doesn't have a thumbwheel, it has a slotted adjuster screw with a locknut.  I set it and forget it :)

So, I suppose you set it with enough friction to make it easy on your throttle wrist but loose enough to snap the return spring back? Is this just a matter of preference?

Yes exactly.  Set it just tight enough that when you're cruising at a steady speed, you don't feel like you're fighting the throttle return spring.  When you let go the carbs should still snap closed smartly.

Was only on the first models, but was taken off, never to return to any Honda made, since....as Product Liability lawyers... had a field day with a non return to idle throttle situation... like this could provide if adjusted incorrectly.

The Honda CB750 K0 was one, if not the FIRST motorcycle to ever have a recall against it. The sticking throttle slides with that stupid four pull cable setup was the recall.
