Cases are split - any advice on examining the guts?
« on: May 03, 2010, 11:38:50 AM »
Hi everyone -
I have got my cases apart and prepping the motor for a new paint job.  Just wondering if some of you wise folks can offer advice or tips on inspection and reassembly.  This is my second 750 rebuild, so I'm not totally in the dark... got about 2,500 miles on my previous motor so far and not even a leak.

I am planning on putting new rod bearings in, as I was lucky enough to score a set.  I don't have main bearings, but on visual inspection alone, the ones in it look great.  Super smooth and no hairline anything.  The crankshaft just floats.  The chains and other bearings all seem ok, but again, I'm just visually inspecting things.  Drive chain tensioner rubber is ok, transmission fork looks all right, oil passages seem clear... what else?

One specific question I have is that my kick start shaft seems wobbly.  I think it was this way on my last bike too, but I'm not sure if this is because it is worn, or if it is designed to have some play in it.  Seems like it would be a lot of pressure on the oil seal, if that's what it relies on to fully stabilize itself...

Any pointers are welcome.  I know there are guys here who have been rebuilding these motors for decades, and I am constantly learning things from this site.  I'll try to add some pics in the next couple days, so everyone can see what I'm getting into.  A build thread is on its way too.

Looking forward to any input.

Kicker is supported in 3 locations once bike is reassembled.
1- The freespinning gear adjacent to the case inner wall.
2- The case.
3- The outer cover relies on the bored through hole to offer support, and techinically the seal should just "soak up" a relatively small amount of freeplay (wobble).
I have a fresh SOHC motor, and the kicker feels "loose", until it is all buttoned back up. Check to see if it is indeed worn out, but more than likely you are fine.

Thanks Hannibal - makes sense that there is more to the cover than just the seal.  Probably should have looked twice before posting that question, but its what was on my mind at the time.  Feeling good about it now.

Anyone have tips on checking my cam chain.  Was tempted to just buy a new one and throw it in, but this one seemed nice and tight when I took it apart.  I should probably add however that this was not a running motor when I started.  One of the pistons was extremely frozen.  Going to post a thread later about how I got it out.

Got some pics uploaded tonight.  Here we go.
