My 80 CB650 Project... already in progress

Hey, everyone :)

I got this CB650 about a year ago.  I did some horse-trading for it, so it cost me 0 out of pocket.  When I got it, it was Burgundy with silver pinstripes, badly fading, with purple paint underneath where it was flaking... purple.  And not some cool metallic purple.. it was like lilac purple.

Anyway, for the mechanical issues:

The bike would turn over, but not start.  Battery was bone dry.  Gas tank was badly rusted.  The chain was rusted badly.  The wiring was SHOT!  No front brakes.  Turn signals missing, did not flash.  Brake light would not work, although the tail light did.  Tires were dry-rotted and would not hold air.  The fairings on the side were missing.  Muffler was missing.



This is what she looks like now.  My 9-year old son helped me paint.  The Fleurs de Lis are courtesy of stencils bought from Wal-Mart.  The paint is a rattle can job, obviously.

I have the wiring sorted out.  The bike runs well, but still does not charge.  New battery.  I have bought LED lights that I am going to install for turn signals, but have not made the brackets yet.  I have a new chain, but have to get it cut down.  Gas tank has been cleaned of all rust :D.  Re-wired the gauges, including the brake light and turn signal issues.  Still need tires, fairings, and a muffler.  The mirrors I bought are too small, and I will get them replaced this coming weekend.

I am on an EXTREMELY tight budget, and this is my very fist bike... I've always wanted one, but my family has always come first, and myself last.  This one cost me basically nothing.  I have about $100 in it so far.

Well, I checked the brushes and cleaned the "stator"(?), but still no charge.  I am getting about 11V+ at the battery @ 1000 rpm, and about 14.5 @2500 RPM.  However, the battery is not charging.  What I am wondering is if I need to fully charge the battery again since I ran it dead before cleaning the alternator parts.  Will that help it, or am I looking at a new alternator / stator(?)?

Also, how loud is this bike with a decent muffler installed?  It's REALLY loud right now coming out of the header, not as loud as an H-D, but I think it will become annoying quickly on the road.

I want the bike to be heard, but not get me a ticket (I know that there are no sound ordinances in South Carolina, but I still don't want to take a chance in one of the small towns with by-the-book cops.

DOHC CB650 in '80? I didn't know they started DOHC 650s until '83...

The placard on the fork reads 1980.  To be honest, I am completely lost beyond that.  I am learning about bikes as I work on this one.  It doesn't look like any real frame modifications have been done to the bike.  There seem to be a lot of mismatched parts on it.  The gauges don't look like the ones I've seen on the 80 models, and nor does the tail light.  The 80's I've seen have a single tail/brake light, whereas this one has a double.

 ???

So, I really don't know what I have here.  It's either an 80... or a Frankenstein.  Either way, I hope that it rides better than it looks at the moment!!

My first thought was a 750 dohc4.      Is it shaft drive?  It's a nithawk of some sort.    On the fork or stearing stem?

It's a chain-drive.  

And it's on the steering stem(?)... shows what I know about bikes.  Right in front of the gas tank on the clutch side....

I was just on Wikipedia looking at CB pictures, and I agree, the motor looks more like a 750-4 than a 650.  Even the 83 650-4 looks different around the top of the motor (I assume where the cam bearing are located.  Since I don't know bike terminology, yet, I'll have to use car terminology and hope that it translates well.)

Yep that looks like it.   Wonder why the vin is wrong.

The title claims it to be a model # rc042... can't determine what that means, but I am looking
