how do you keep the cut edge from rusting? i'm going to be cutting down my rear fender today in preperation for reinstalling it and the stock grab bar and a modified stock seat. i'd thought maybe some nail polish then putting some chrome door edge molding on it might work. opinions?

I cut a section out of the top of the fender on mine and then reattached it up near the mounting bracket.  Effectively shortening the fender as opposed to bobbibng it.  That kept the chrome finished edge along the bottom.  The seat covered the the attachment area.  I kept the stock mounting flange at teh top and the stock rolled lip at the end.

I brushed on a couple of coats of rustoleum silver and followed it up with chrome door edge guard. cant see the paint because of the edge guard but it is unobtrusive enough that you could skip the guard and its not really noticeable unless ya really scrutinize.

Jeff,

I did the same thing on my '74 rear fender.  After cutting and de-burring, I cleaned the underside of the fender and painted it flat black.  Before doing this, I taped the top of the fender; about 1/16" back from the cut, so the paint would "wrap" the cut.  You cannot see it, unless you put your face there, and because it was taped off it looks intentional anyway.

Good luck,

if you aren't painting it, just tape off the fender so only a pit of the edge shows, and clearcoat it.
No.
