Anyone from NE Ohio
« on: April 15, 2010, 09:06:56 AM »
I am in Akron. I have a '78 CB550K. I am looking to find someone in the area that I can compare engine sounds to. I do not know if my engine sounds like it should. My bike runs great and looks even better. I hear the timing chain all the time. I am not sure if it is normal for this engine or if I need to replace the tensioner.

I am a little on the anal retentive side when it comes to mechanical things. They either have to work exactly the way they should, or I will keep working on it until it does.

Please let me know.

The Cb550 has a spring loaded tensioner. Loosening the lock nut will allow the adjuster to move. You may want to turn the engine over slow to make sure all of the slack in the chain is on the tensioner side so the tensioner can adjust to the tightest position possible. When tightening the lock nut be sure the tensioner bolt does not turn backwards. This will loosen the tensioner if it moves when tightening the nut. The CB550 owners manual or the service manual available on this site is probably what you need for a detailed explanation. I recommend DL'ing the complete service manual. I burned a CD so i know I'll always have it. Good luck hope this helps.
