Also looking at this seat on ebay, not 100% sure it will work though. As I need the later model seat, or an F model. Doesn't quite match the pics you sent me.

Well I bought a "parts" bike, which was actually a bunch of parts in his garage, looks like he had a fire. I did get a 4-1 header, an oil cooler, and two seats, and a box full of carbs. I'll have to sort through all the stuff and see if anything is salvageable. On another note the 77/78k seats don't fit either as the grab rail is different, and they are a lot bigger than the  74-76 seats. I will get a pic to show the difference. Looks like I may be making a custom seat.

Heres a pic. Tried to hold it up to the other one and snap a pic, so its not the best. Didn't feel like taking the other seat off.
What spike strips are you referring to? After all the work I put into my forks, I'm thinking of swapping them out for the forks off the 78 I just got. Should I switch to the gatorless forks, w/o headlight ears? Or keep what I have now?

well i couldnt readily find the post where it was mentioned. but here is his ebay listing... i think there is a link to the video of how they work... looks pretty legit. mine should be on the way now.

So I hacked up a seat to see what I could do. The results. Wish I'd left another couple inches on the back, but its cut now.

Finished the seat up tonight, might work on putting together a better crafted peice, but this lets me finally use my painted tank.

looks good to me... i tried covering mine last night and then realized im gonna have to work on the foam a little more.... good thing vinyl is cheap

I got the rough shape knocked out, then used inch thick foam over the whole thing. I got it at hobby lobby while getting the vinyl. Helps hide any defects in the denser foam, and just pull down tight. The only problem I really encountered was the backing of the vinyl did not stick to the foam when I used spray adhesive. Which caused the vinyl to lift on the lower part of the seat(where you butt goes) while I was tightening and attaching.

Your bike is looking cool.  I recently bought a tank like yours w/ the fuel door for my '74 550.  So, it's helpful to see what it'll look like on my frame.  Do you have any advice on getting the vinyl to stick better where your butt goes?  Any lessons learned?

On an unrelated note, what happened to our Jayhawks?  Northern Iowa?!  Go figure.

Ideally it would be made out of 3 or 4 pieces cut to match the contour of the seat. top piece and sides then sewn together. I don't have a sewing machine, my moms is broke, and I'm not inclined to pay $100 to get a seat upholstered. I just used one piece and moved around the seat pulling and stretching to remove bunching. If I could find something that would have stuck that would have been helpful, but as I was already doing it, and this seat is most likely a stopgap until I find a better solution, I just finished as best I could. Materials only cost me ten bucks, and I have enough to do it again if I want to.

Ah the Jayhawks, its always the no name teams we have to look out for in the National Championships. See how it goes next year, we lost some good players.
