Can I jam this in the back of my truck?
« on: January 29, 2006, 04:38:57 PM »
I know it's not a SOHC4 (SOHC2??) but it's close.  I just scored a 1969 CB175 (!), and now I have to figure out how to get it home.  I'll have about a 20 mile run, reasonably all backroads.  I know nothing about the physical size or weight of a 175.  I've got a Chevy Trailbalzer - what are the odds that I can jam it in the back?  If it fits, what will leak out with it (presumably) on it's side?  Which should be up and which side is down? Or should I try to dig up a trailer somewhere?

Thanks.

i'd be willing to bet on such an old bike with lower height than newer bikes that if you loosen the bars and twist them down, take the mirrors off it'd probly fit... if not it wouldn't have to go all the way on its side just prop it up somehow... best use a tarp in the truck either way just to be safe

I've done a couple of quick searches and can find nothing on the specs - size, weight, etc.  Anyone have any?  I know I'd have trouble with my 550, but as pointed out, I bet it is smaller and a lot lighter.

I've had no problem putting my CB750 in the back of my truck.  I left it standing up and strapped it down real good.  The length of your truck bed is the only real issue.  Can't help you out with that part.

Wow - what a trip down memory lane. A friend's younger brother bought one identical to that in 1970. That looks too nice of shape to be jammed into a Trailblazer. Rent or borrow a utility trailer for the truck or borrow a friend's pickup. Be a shame to bang up the little lady after holding on for 37 years

I'm thinking the same, but I don't have a trailer myself, so it may be '...off to U-haul".

I haven't seen it yet, but here's the other pics I have.  It seems the PO2 dumped it and bent the headlight ear.  The other know issues:  rusted left muffler, seat torn and missing kick-starter.  It wasn't mentioned, but I think it's also missing the rear grab bar.  Otherwise, it is said to be running, all lights working (including the headlight) and even a functioning battery.

I think I've found my cure to an insatiable appetite to wrench without fear of knocking my only bike out of commission.  Of course, another 550 was my goal, as the pile of spare 550 stuff is growing exponentially.

I'm almost certain that will fit in your trailblazer in the upright position, as long as you can remove the rear bench seat.  Like was said before, you may have to loosen the handlebars to turn them down and remove the mirrors, but it should fit.  I drove my 750 from Colorado to Oregon in the back of my friend's '85 Toyota minivan, and it fit just fine.

Ah-Ha!  I found them; CB175:

Length: 77.8"
Width: 29.31"
Height: 40.0"
Wheel Base: 50.2"
Weight: 299.9#

...and a whopping 20HP at 10,500 RPM.

Truck's back is only ~34" tall at the entry.  I believe I'm going to need a trailer.

how tall is it once inside, all you have to do is wheel it in at an angle and set it back upright once you get it in... i've done this a number of times with other similar bikes and suvs

I a friend and his dad put a Harley 74 in the back of a Rambler stationwagon and I have put a airplane engine in the back of a minivan so there is just about allways a way to do it.Dannie

How 'bout (assuming you have some help at both ends), pull the tank, seat, and wheels off. Should get the height and weight down enough to manhandle it in there.

Looks like a sweetie pie. Shame about that little dent in the tank, but you might be able to get something in there and rub it out. Night be able to tap the HL ear out too. Don't hurt that bike- I like it too much  ;) They're like a feather compared to your 550, BTW.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I've only got ~37" inside and it will be only me.  At 299.9# (well, it's missing a rear view mirror, so it will be a little less), I don't think I could muscle it in and out without breaking something on either the bike or the truck.  There's a couple of U-Haul guys nearby, and for less than $20, I can rent one for 1/2 a day.  Beats tearing it apart just to get it home.  Seems to make much more sense, however odd for me that may be.

I saw the dent, odd how it lines up with the bliker light (the one mounted to the bent ear).  It's kinda on the edge, but seems to have just missed the bend.  Can't wait to get it home and check it out.  I used to ride a CR125 Elsinore dirt bike way back when.  I bet this isn't much different.

I stumbled on it wandering around e-bay scanning for a cheap 2nd bike.  Luckily I bookmarked it, as I could never find it again in any further searches.  I don't know what catagory it was buried under, but it only had a 1 day listing.  I tossed in the asking price, and no one else ever bid on it, probably couldn't find it.  And, it ends up being only 15-20 miles down the road.

You will have a lot of fun, as I'm having with my CB350. As you said, lets  you wrench without fear of ruining anything.

There was a picture in Cycleworld a few months ago of what looks to be a Yamaha XS1100 in the trunk of a car :o.  Obviously it's not gonna fit in all the way in, so you'll have to get someone to ride back there and hold it.

Just don't take the old VW, or you'll have to dirve with your head out the window...I guess it would be called "doggie style". ;D

I can't wait to get it to see what needs to be done.  I'm negotiating with the PO for delivery.

If it performs anywhere near it's rated 65mpg (did I just buy a sporty Vespa??), I can stop whining about my 550's low mileage (another thread...).  Good to putter back & forth to work.  And I'm still trying to convince my wife to learn how to ride, this would be perfect for it.  Long shot though, very, very long.

Did I ever!

Look here ---> http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=7040.msg63635#msg63635

I've already asked a million questions, with only a couple million more to come.  I probably should have taken the whole day off today instead of just a couple of hours this morning as I was totally worthless.
