Sweet ... What about the battery? I've heard of replacing the battery with smaller units for racing. It's probably behind the box in front of the rear wheel.

Is the swingarm lengthened to give the shocks more of a angle?

The top mounting point of the shocks is farther forward.  That's what gives them that angle.

So what is the main difference between having flat tracker style & bobber style?

Bobber style goes back to the late 40's and 50's. GI's returning after the war would buy surplus Harleys and what not. They would start modifying them to make them faster/manuverable. Usually started with stripping off the military gear and wacking off the rear fenders. Makes them lighter.

Ok so will those fat tires above fit on standard cb550 rims or will I need wider rims? Do I need to lower the bike at all to achive the above look? Also do I need a different fork (lower or more chopper grade) to get this style? Anything else I need to consider to get that bobber look of sr500 above? Thank you for your answers!

You may have to get wider rims depending on which tire you use. The way to go is order thr rims and spokes then lace them to your hubs.

Its really a matter of taste if the bike needs lowering. The first pic in this thread shows a relocated set of rear shocks. The third pic you posted I believe has the front forks pushed up farther into the triple trees, which lowers the front. Smaller diameter rims will also lower the bike.

It's really about making something you think is cool.

I wonder how the red bike runs..without a throttle cable.  Must not be done.  Those are some cool bikes!

He must have started with a track bike.  Sure didn't leave any thing un-touched though.

Glenn,

      That's definitely one wicked bike.

kghost,

Indians were a big part  of the bobber scene along with the Harleys.

elcid,

Check w/ Greg (ohiocaferacer) on lowering your forks.

I'm not much on the chopper style forks but, I gotta tell ya, those are nice!!  Later on, Bill

Excellent updated version of a tuff bobber. And along with throttle cable there are a few other bits remiss, so I'd say she's not done at that point. Definitely a great project.

Thought I heard someone mention my name ;D

The 500/4 and the 550/4 are pretty easy to lower the forks.......just some simply machine work to the internals.
I know i've posted this pic of my 72 CB500/4 before.....but i'll post it again. The bike is lowered about 3" front and rear. The rear was lowered with 11" short shocks and lowering blocks at the bottom. There is more info at my website.

If there is anything I can help with....feel free to drop me a note thru my website.
Later,
Greg

Greg, I gotta laugh that you're putting floor boards on a lowered cafe.

Duster, seems like you're the first one to realize that is a springer- not forks.  Check the Harley aftermarket cataloques for springers, folks.  Not as much travel, but they're supposed to be a better ride in some ways because of less "sticktion".
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I thought it was obvious that the bike had a springer which does look good but, I don't think I'd ever want to build with one. I admit that I've seen some that were pretty sharp but, not for me. Myself, I'm looking to build with a comfortable riding set of telescopic forks. I wouldn't mind the "upside
down" type like Greg used on a 350 he's building. My problem is, I've got to use what I can afford and suits me. Anyway I gotta get outa here,  Bill

No....this bike isnt gonna be a cafe.

I am building it more as a lowered & wide roadster....originally, there were to be hard bags on the back.

-no not really, just didn't mention it. And while springers are not the go fast handling or even handling in general tickets, for looks in some opinions (mine included) they are the baddest looking item on the planet. A 1947 knucklehead with a chrome 12 inch over springer is one mean looker.

duster - you've been around a bit on the planet, correct. Remember Tom McMullen and AEE choppers from the mid/late 60s? He really got started by the 4th redo on his own 74 knuck and wound up calling it "Mindbender". That was and still is the absolute sweetest motorcycle I have yet to lay eyes on. When he ditched he 12 inch over glide front end with the 21 inch wheel and went to the 20 inch over AEE springer with the narrow 16 incher and kept the skyscraper stacks......nirvana. Didn't care for the drag piped phase with the square glide front.

EDIT - crappy B&W picture of her during the drag pipe/short king and queen phase. The paint was spectatular - well you'd never know from a B&W picture ;D And no, those springers don't handle for crap, but dang that is a sweet looker.
