I guess that depends on your definition of 'make' Scott.   I designed the gauge mount in Mastercam (3 pieces), and had them waterjet cut.  Then I fitted them together and drilled the holes for the x16 3mx15 button allens.  After finishing the edges I had the pieces polished and anodized.

I guess that counts.. At least from my point of view, bet you could sell a bunch of those. As for the color, I would say red, it will pop with the gray frame.. Just my opinion.

Thanks Scott.  Not sure about selling more like this one exactly.  To many compromises if you want to keep stock components.

If I made the base a little deeper and wider, you could put LEDs in for warning lights, and use the stock ignition switch.  If there's some interest...

Red was definitely a choice, also clear.  There will be red anodize.  The filter adapter, and filter mount will be red.  Just waiting for the filter mount pieces to arrive from Terry.  The part that the filter attaches to will be red (machine finish), and the mounting ring clear (maybe polished).  My blue Frankenbike points cover will mount on top of that.  There was a rumour that a certain 750 was going to get the same setup.   Will post pictures from OZ as soon as I can get them loaded.

It was like Christmas, when I went to the post office today.  My modified slow jets arrived.  So I can finish the carb assembly, and mount them.  The HID headlight kit arrived.  No picture yet, not sure what plugs to what. .

My 'Plan B' fork brace also arrived.  Great story behind its creation (which doesn't quite have an ending yet).  Suffice to say it was born though email descriptions / emailed measurements / re-emailed measurements - oh " not mm!) , and some last minute doubt about the design.  It is a solid fixed brace, made for my 550 reversed forks.  Major change was to flat wipers, used 80 CB750.  The other interesting twist is that a special ring was made to fit / fill each of the old dustcap seats.  This allows that section to become part of the clamping area (adds 30%).



The new longer shocks arrived.  Got a set of YSS 330mm (13"), look great, with nice features.   Their gas, rebuildable upside down body, threaded pre-load, rebound adjust, progressive springs (rider matched), and they have a further 10mm of length adjustment.   Expect them to work well with the upgraded forks.  Won't be an overly quick bike, but it should be great in the twisties.  The bottom bolts will get replaced with the SS ones I have already.



The ceramic coating company emailed to say they received the pipes and they are 'in process'.   Might have that sound video sooner than I thought.

New addition to the collection.  Have always want one of these from the first day I saw one.  Thanks to bwaller I now have a great stock example of a CB400 F.  This one is a 76.  It will serve as my 'rehab ride', and later as the 'city bike'.



Spent today trying to work on the cafe.  Actually spent most of the day staring at the 400.  Did do some hand 'exercises' - the 'brake' one on the 400.    Boy is it pretty - thanks Brent.

Was his wife's 'other' bike.  Wasn't getting used (would you with that 550 he built her ), he was looking for a 'good home', I was looking for a stock 400F (and I really wanted red  .

Thanks Brent.  Just a question - 'oldest daughter' - Jimmy?  not related to 'Sue' Cash by any chance?   I know the bike is mechanically great, sounds like it may need a theapist though.  

I almost came over to see how things were going today.  Ended up leaving a bit early so I could p/u some pit stands at GP Bikes.  You ended up with a great day - blue skys, sun, heat .  So does that mean you might want to show a few more of those 'young guys', the fast way on an even faster 550?  Stan says P3 Lightweight.   All those things you don't like about P2 (let you go fast, just not turn or brake) go away.

Finally got around to uploading pictures of the remote filter mount Terry made.  Neat feature is that it is reversable.  The filter can be mounted either facing inboard, or outboard, by simply flipping the filter part around.  I am planning on using it with the filter in, and the lines running forward to the adapter Terry made previously.

Filter in the out position.  Advantage to this is slightly easier oil changes, and lines are fully protected by engine.  Filter becomes a pocket rocket skid block.



How it will look installed.  Lines will run forward and around front of engine to the remote adapter.  Terry mocked this up on a 750. The only difference in mounting on a 550 or 750 is the position of the holes for mounting to the cases.  Points cover bolts are replaced with studs to allow the stock cover to be reused.


As mentioned previously, it uses a WIX filter.  This particular version is used on the Ford Focus / Mazda 3, and some Chrysler products.  Seems in OZ it's also used on Kobota tractors.

I am doing a 550 Joe.  Little bikes rule the twisties.

The 750 and 550 are the same at the points end of the cases.  The only difference is the position of the holes that hold the points cover.  10 & 4 for the 550, and 11 & 5 for the 750.  Terry did not have a 550 (suprise ), so he used one of his 750's for mock up.  That is a 550 points cover in the pictures, and the mounting ring is drilled for it.  Terry also slightly slotted the three bolt holes (done after pictures taken) so there is some fine adjustment for final filter position.

Ok, so do we get anymore hints as to what 'Steampunk' is?  Are you turning a 550 into an Expresso machine?

Hi Godffrey - the benefit is in not having to remove my Swarbrick pipes everytime I do an oil change.  The stock filter was going to be a very tight fit (2 & 3 paper thickness away, if not touching).

Yeah Scott, it's going to be a big help.  Especially as I have a fresh topend to break in; so a few extra oil changes.  If you check the pictures at the top of pg.4 you'll see how tight it is.

Ok... this is driving me crazy.  Maybe I'm just not too quick today, but I don't get how that works oil filter adapter works  

The normal mounting position is on the lower front of the engine... correct??  Is there a blockoff plate for the stock position?  Also how does the oil get to the filter?  

Or is there a diverter plate in the stock position that routes lines to the adapter pictured?

I wont be able to sleep until someone can explain this to me!!!

PS... I've got the same issue with my Yam XS750 build and a Hooker 3-1-3 exhaust system that I'll have to remove for oil changes.  Maybe terry wants to make one for my Yammy

That's the basics ffjmoore.  This is a similar setup to the ones I have used on cars.

CBjoe, if you go to pg.3, about 1/2 way down are pictures of the adapter that goes at the front.  Lines will exit from the top, route between the barrels and downtube (rt side), around corner, and attach to the remote filter.  When you remove the filter, any spillage will be in the space between the case and clutch cover.  Hope that helps you get some sleep.

Thanks for the compliment Godffrey.  The design was a joint effort between Terry and myself.  I sent him pictures and descriptions of what I wanted to do, and he machined up the parts you see, incorporating his ideas.

As for a cooler, to start with no.  However adding one just involves mounting it, and changing the line coming back from the filter.  It would run to the cooler then back to the adapter at the engine front (up & down frame tubes).  Could probably reuse the original line for the return, with a new fitting at the cooler.
