That's a 77 400F that somebody added some black paint to on the top.

I was thinking cb400f(s) have a gas tank with a shiny gas cap on the top like this:

Anyways, problem solved!

I assume 77 was the only year they made cb400f tanks like this then?
Does that mean this tank is rare!!? ::)

Thank you again, Gordon.

It's definitely a 77 400F tank.  Yes, only year with the trap door.  75 and 76 had the chrome cap.

Today I found this web site:

"ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT, IF INVOLVED IN A COLLISION, THE RIDER COULD IMPACT THE HINGED FUEL FILLER CAP IN SUCH A MANNER AS TO ACTUATE THE RELEASE LEVER AND OPEN THE CAP. THIS WOULD RESULT IN A GASOLINE LEAK."

I own 3 '77 cb400f's, have an affinity for the cb400f in the '75-'77 model year range (not the late-80s cb400f though) -- the 1st bike I ever owned was a 1976 cb400f.

All 3 of my 77s have a tank looks exactly like that, but your guy probably painted the top because the top of those sun-fades.  All 3 of mine look fine on the sides of the tank but faded on top.

So I asked the seller when I got my 1st '77 about the gas cap and he said "Honda got sued because several riders got burned due to the cap opening in a crash on the early flip-up tank caps, so Honda changed the gas cap."  I didn't verify the 'lawsuit issue' but it sounds plausible.

The above is why Honda had a huge recall in 1976 for all the bikes that had the external release button on the gas cap.  They replaced it with a lock type latch that you used your key to open.  Guess it was safer but the original release looks better but are hard to come by.   The shops were supposed to can the originals so there aren't many left around.  The trap doors came the next year as the factory fix.
