What is the best drummel piece to strip paint and rust?
« on: January 29, 2006, 05:23:23 PM »
Hi.  I have a new frame.  There isn't much rust, but I want to strip off the paint and what little rust there is and also smooth out the welded spots.  I was using a drummel tool, but it seems to go through the attachments rather quickly.  It's been suggested that I use Emery paper, but it seems to me a drummel attachment would be quicker.  Any suggestions?

You can get Dremel sanding rolls in 60 and 120 grit. I love them, but be careful as they will zap past where you want to go real quickly. Sort of like a very small cutoff wheel. ;D But really the 60 and then the 120 grit really erases rust or blems and makes a nice finish. I suggest practicing on a piece of scrap before going for the real deal.

Are you considering taking the whole frame down, or just the rust?

If just the rust, sand it by hand then use a rust converter. If your going to do the whole frame, take it and get it sandblasted.

I am doing it to the whole frame.  Sandblasting won't take care of those unsightly weld marks.  I've seen a web site (Red Baron) where the guy builds his own frame and then smooths it all out with his dremmel, even getting rid of the weld marks, so I am trying to do that.  Also looking to do anything I can by myself.  One of my project goals is to spend very little money.  I am trying to build a nice chopper for no more $3K.  I know it's been done, I just have to spend only what I have to.

Then the Dremel is just the ticket with the tootsie rolls to clean up the ugly welds. For $4 for a 6 pack you can't go wrong.

What do you mean tootsie rolls?

Common name given to the sandpaper rolls for the sanding accessory.

You are doing the whole bike with those.... :D
When you say you want to smooth out the weld spots, I trust you don't mean smooth down the joints where the frame is assembled.
I had a guy do that once and couldn't understand why the joint failed.  ::)

Whole frame....sandblast and then concentrate on the "Blemishes" not the "Welds"

Well said Paul, I've seen dickheads "smooth" most of the welds right off their frames, then wonder why I asked them what was actually holding their bikes together?

Unless you really know what you're doing, either leave it alone, or take it to a reputable engineering shop, and have them reweld the joints and smooth off the excess material. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Before jumping all over the guy, maybe he is going to build up the weld areas and then smooth the weld area out. While there are some out there that may do as you mentioned, that's just Darwin's way of removing the chaff.

Not jumping over this guy at all 6P, (but thanks for jumping on me.......not.) he's obviously a novice, and I believe it's our responsibility to advise against dangerous practises before they become victims of their own inexperience. Look after your own, but also look before you leap. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I appreciate all of the input.  I am planning on smoothing out the welds and while I am a novice, I have quite a bit of common sense, though your comments were still appreciated since they were for my safety.  The welds are already built up quite a bit and I am only going to hit them lightly, anyway.

Rather than grind the frame welds down.....why not fill them with body filler....then sand it smooth.

I dont know that I would be grinding down any weld material on frame joints...built up or otherwise. Just about any builder will have a body man fill a frame....rather than grind it down. You will get a much more professional look with filler.

...just my 2 cents.

Greg

Whoa Terry - not a slam at you at all, I read your post and thought he guy may have a clue. My comment "Before jumping all over the guy" was meant for a board wide read - not toward you.  No reflection towards you at all. I don't jump on people - especially through keyboards. Sorry if you took it the wrong way.
But I do appreciate your witty comeback.

I'll look into it.  That may work since I don't plan to powder coat the bike.  I plan to paint it myself.
