It sure would be a lot easier for everyone if people documented their work better...  If the guy could show you photos and receipts, something that was more than just word of mouth.  How can you know for sure unless you take the engine apart?  I'd hate to drop the cash, and find out later that I was duped.  If he can't prove what's in the engine, then he's going to have to pay a 'stupid tax' in the form of a lower price.  Period.  He should have documented it better.

Geeez, I did not think that it would cause such a debate but its all good info.

The excitement aside, around 1500 is all that I am really willing to spend anyways. He is sending me the builders number directly so I can talk to him to see how legit it is. Thats the whole problem with motors. You dont know unless you open it up, or did it yourself but I would be saving a little money and a lot of my time and hassle if its already together.

I re-read your signature, Shenanigans. Dude, this isn't your first rodeo! You have ridden/owned 750s before; if the motor is built as advertised, you WILL feel the difference, and you know what the motor should sound like mechanically. Once you've spent a few miles with the built motor, you'll never go back to stock! Of course, this is just my opinion, some thousands of miles after my first ride... ;)

Chortling, tell us about the bikes they WOULD NOT sell to you, not the ones you did get.

I have a hard time believing you got every bike you put an offer on..

I am not trying to be a dick.. rather be a bit realistic..

You know, I gave away a perfectly good Zephyr 750 Kaw a few years ago.  Just didn't want it no more.  Gave it away to some feller from my church.  But no, not everyone will sell.

But let's face it, if the bike is too much for your wallet or too scary or you broke your back on the job and you cant ride no more or you find a guy dont want his Zephyr 750 no more..etc.  then you can find a deal.  I was going through divorce and just gave much of my stuff away.   Some of you may know how that one goes.

Because fact of the matter is, the hot rodder who builds a nice bike will have to have something happen before he let her go.  I no way ever get everything I want in life.

If I could I'd have a harem of bout 100 playboy bunnies like Hugh Hefner now.   :D

I bought a kz1000 from a 68 year old man one time.  He swore up and down "It has hot cams. It has a big bore kit.  It has this, it has that."

Damn motor was BOOOOOOOOONE STOCK.

From a 68 year old man too.  So much for 'respect your elders' there.
I reckon he was just wanting to get her off the porch.

I'm riding a modded K0, it's slowly going back to the stock look but I ain't gonna take off the Lester mags or remove the big bore kit. This puppy rocks, I've also got an F0 with a stock engine, there is a big difference in power. It's all about what it's worth to you.

Stock CB750's in mint condition look great, and early ones can go for big bucks, but compared to modern bikes, they are just so boring to ride, sh1t brakes, sh1t handling, sh1t accelleration, sh1t, sh1t, sh1t. Yeah, I know, lots of folk love boring, and I can dig that too. I've got a January build CB750K0 that will stay original as long as I own it, it's just too valuable to fcuk up.

But a K5 or K6 isn't worth all that much, and often the cost of a proper restoration can be much more than making a sweet custom bike, with mods that will take it into the real world of today, with good looks, good handling, plenty of power, and good brakes to boot.

I bought this bike as a crashed wreck for 1500 bucks, the previous owner rebuilt the F2 engine with an 836cc kit, Dyna ignition and coils, and modded some 32mm CV carbs to suit. It is probably the sweetest running CB750 of the 20 or so that I've owned, I bought it "sight unseen" in that I couldn't start it or ride it until after I'd replaced all the damaged parts, so I was very pleasantly surprised indeed.

It came with a lot of the parts needed to repair the damage (dropped on the right side at approx 60 MPH) and I only spent less than 1000 bucks to get it to this condition. It's still a "work in progress" and I'll keep doing little bits as time goes by, but this bike is my new "daily rider" and I won't be selling it soon, unless something better comes along, ha ha! ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Ha ha, that's true mate, and don't worry, I've bought more than one bike that looked like it was used as an extra in Mad Max! It's probably herecy, but I prefer to convert them back to something less of an eyesore...........  ;)

The front fender alone's bad*ss.   I love that front end -- is that the stock fork and triple tree?
What bike is the front fender from?  I have to replace my front fender on my '69 cb750, I want me one a them now!

THAT IS A HOT LOOKING MACHINE THERE  I am not one of those guys with that cosmetic flair touch now wish I was though.   The bike don't look stock it looks tastefully hotrodded, for $1000 AU ...
wow financially efficient makeover too congratulations on that'n!

I like that front fender!!  Is it from another Honda model?  It reminds me of an RD400 front fender...? Don't know if that would fit on a Honda front end  though...?

Hi CS, front fender is a GN250 Suzuki item and forks and brakes are from a FZR1000 Yamaha, Yamaha discs are mated to a modded Honda front hub and an 18 inch front rim. If i have stuffed anything up there i am sure Terry will correct me... ;)

Thanks Mate, Mick got it all right, it's a Suzuki fender and looks much nicer I think than the Kawasaki item that was on the wreck when I bought it, not that it was salvageable, the whole front end took the brunt of the crash, and apart from the "machined from billet" triples that Ken, the PO made, the rest was junk, including the rather expensive 41mm forks, good used ones set me back 500 bucks on their own.

Sadly that fender is for an 18 inch front wheel, so won't work on your bike unless you're planning on using a smaller wheel. Thanks again, and like you, I like "tasteful" customs, not half-arsed rat bikes. Cheers, Terry. ;D

All that motor work and they kept the stock carbs, airbox, and exhaust? if the guy is asking allot of cash for it due to the motor being all trick, i would want the mechanics name that went through it.
I have a friend that paid 1500 for a junky 74k 750 that he was told was a Yosh 900 kit. It was his first honda so he did not know it was stock or what to look for.
He paid 1500 for a 500 bike and he had to dump 500 or so into it.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

I talked to the guy who had it built today. I guess it has a bit of history (or so I have been told). Long story short he told me he was sad that the bike was no longer in his possession and told me its whole story. It was stripped down and rebuilt around 84 and used for a show bike. He has receipts for all the work somewhere. J.E. pistons mild cam, polished head blah blah he payed to have the bike built and it was used as weekend bike for a while. He seemed pretty genuine. The more we talked about the bike the more depressed he seemed to get about it in a way. I guess they were all involved with Valley cycles back in "the day" and the CB750 preservation society web site and club. Found the bike a couple other places around the net and all seems legit. Claimed it was in a couple of mags in the early? 80's. For sure going to go take a look Thursday. All this is going to make it hard to get the price down. He cringed when I told him the owners current asking price. Frankly it may have that much into it but its still too much for a CB750. I think given the facts I am willing to take a little risk. Valley cycles is still around so I am going to give a call to Kurt, the owner, and see if he remembers putting the bike together.

When a bike starts becoming a detective novel...  ::)

If it means anything I got a good feeling about the bike.

Just sayin'

When I bought my K1 motored hot-rod in '79, I paid about half again more than it sold for new, probably close to a brand new dohc at the time. I knew the PO had invested almost as much for the frame and wheels alone that I paid for the whole bike, so I really didn't worry about the stuff I knew was wrong. Sounds like the bike was indeed professionally built, so you can factor in the price of taking a similar condition, stock motored bike, and what it would take to build the motor to the level of the one you're looking at. Keep us posted!!!!

After that story, I feel a little better about it too.  If you do get it, for the price of a gasket set, you could take it apart for peace of mind (and also give it a good cleaning, maybe do a little extra souping...).

Wow man, fun adventure. I'll say this.
IF you can get all the prof that the work was done on this bike and the bike runs very well. $2500 is not a bad price at all. Its not a steal but it a fare price. You could not in your dreams by a good condition bike and buy the parts and have all that motor work done for less.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

Just got back from looking at it. Looks good and runs and idles well. Took it on a test ride but he lives in the middle of nowhere so only a little pavement riding. Had 87 in it when it is supposed to have a higher grade gas in it (Via the guy who owned it before him). Pulled a plug and there was a non stock piston with a high dome and what looked like larger valve pockets. Lots of compression. I think the pucks or the oil passages are not 100% tight but I have seen much worse.

"2650"

"1400"

"I really need to buy a trailer, 2200"

"1600"

"2000"

"1800 max"

Done.

So 1800 and I come back to pick it up Sunday. Before I leave with it Sunday I will throw in some higher grade gas to see if that helps. It feels only a little faster than a stock 750 but the revs rise slower than they should. The bike SHOULD feel a bit faster with any of those mods. Would a lower octane gas cause those symptoms? POs PO did said I needed to run higher grade to make it scoot. Needs tires and probably a carb clean but he would not go any lower than that.
