KZ 400 ltd/440 ltd questions
« on: May 05, 2010, 10:38:11 PM »
I just bought a 1979 kz400 ltd for a project bike.  The bike doesn't run, so getting her going is going to be my first step.  I have never attempted anything more than oil changes and the like on a bike so i thought it could be a lot of fun.  Well, my bike has the engine off of a 1981 kz440 ltd on it, and that model came with an electronic ignition, but the 400 it is sitting in originally had the points setup.  I am wondering if it makes a difference which ignition system i decide to use?  Would I be able to put the 440's electronic on there?  My next question is about exhaust, it only has 1 of the mufflers on it (the ugly stock megaphone type) and I would like to just put straight pipes on it, will the carbs need to be adjusted?

www.kz400.com

An excellent site, and an excellent and active forum to help you.

I don't know about the interchangeability of the electronic ignition.  Sure to be some issues re: fitup and wiring harness.

Yes, you'll need to rejet.

Good luck and have fun with it!

I would put the 440 top end on the 400 bottom end, that way you keep the kickstart.

Keep the elec ignition if you can. I think it will fit to the 400 case.
No.
