just put some peppers in last week. they should be fine and grow till the first frost in November.
here's on for you all.. found this one on the net.
homemade bug spray.
1 1/2 gallons of water
4-5 jalapeno peppers
1 bar of ivory soap grated up.
blend it all together and spray it on your plants.
i use it since my kids are always in the garden. works good.

Absolutely!  I've never had a problem with tomato horn worm since planting Basil along side it.  Also, marigolds are always in my garden.  I also have a book on companion planting.  It works!

The book is:  Carrots Love Tomatoes by Louise Riotte.
Amazon sells it for about $11.

I found this below in a google search.  I didn't read it all so I don't know if it has all the same text.  Appears to be authored by the same person.   It looks like it might be edited or abbreviated with regard to my book (which I got in 1986).

Look's like ants also like my raised beds. What can I do for them I have heard cornmeal but  have not tried that yet.

I always heard clover is a good plant to have around, so I started a patch.

It doesn't grow taller than most vegetables, and is a legume so it helps put nitrogen in the soil. I started a patch in my front yard, hopefully it grows in thick enough to smother out the weeds that come when you turn the soil.

Forgot about the marigolds this year and will have to get some. I'll see if the library has the book Lloyd, thanks for the tip. Remember libraries?

What sort of problems are you getting with the ants? Ants everywhere here too but I've seen them as part of nature. Are they eating your plants? Like worms, I'd thought they would aerate the soil with their work.

Thanks! I'll start some under a light from seed. Thta is how all mine got started this year and it saves a ton of money. Peppermint oil for ants. They don't want to cross it.

Are they eating your plants? Like worms, I'd thought they would aerate the soil with their work.
Ants will "heard" aphids about your garden.  They guard, protect, and physically distribute aphids around your garden foliage.
Aphids literally suck the life out of your vegetable plants, and weaken them to diminish or prevent crop yields.
Ants benefit from aphids as the aphids secrete a waxy substance that the ants "milk" and use  for food.

As far as I know, if you have no aphid population, the ants don't harm your garden, unless their colony decides your plant's root system is invading their territory, which they increasingly expand.

I'm doing more reading but I don't see why get rid of them if not eating at the roots.

I've had Marigolds volunteer for the last 8 years or so and wanted to thin them out so I didn't leave them out after fall, and didn't spread the seed. Only got a couple and one was in the wrong place so I potted it and killed it.

Gotta find some Basil before the month is over, only have one of those that I see from the seeds I spread.

Marigolds don't volunteer here. Dill and cilantro everywhere but not marigolds. Is it possible the marigolds I am buying are hybrids and the seeds don't work? I did save marigold seed from the ones last year, purchased plants that were prolific and pretty and I tried to start them in March with the other stuff on the grow stand, but nothing came up from those.

Well we have just about every thing in and the tomatoes seem to doing brilliantly, peppers, are going along good but something has been at the beans and they're having a tough time, the peas are going good we've already been eating them and the other thing we've noticed the carrots are not germinating the way they should, I know that we're going to replant both the beans and the carrots a little later this season to see if we can't get some in before winter.
This is the first year that we will have tried crop rotation, we put in a new bed and got a 100' by 20' piece turned over a the back (peppers and squash) now have to go and disrupt weeds back there, the new bed is 17' by 40' and is full of tomatoes ( 130 of the little gems ) I'll try and post pictures shortly as soon as I catch up on some of my projects like finishing repairing our garden tractor (Stony Keppel township is hard on mower blades) which sounds minimal  but at 72 is a pain because getting down and up a few times means that I'm screwed up for the rest of the day, as  far as the carrots go I think the flaky weather has been the cause of that ( we've had abnormally warm temps early ). Anyone else have poor germination?

Good germination of everything here except for the marigolds but I am no where near as ambitious as you seem to be Bill.

And growth has been near spectacular with the sun and rain co-operating. Couple days I had to carry many cans of water to help out. My irrigation system is not available - I'm doing some work adding a couple solar panels to the shed roof to run a small dc pump.

You had the same weather I think Bill for three days 32C/90F plus the humidity made it over 100, couple records set.

I didn't ride in any of that fine weather. Must get out this weekend!

found a good use for the decrepit flower bed on the one side of the house. tilled it up, fertilized and planted hubbard squash to make the wife punkin soup this fall. wondered if the neighbor would mind but he has already laid claim to anything that grows into his yard!
