ah yes kittaning, close to kinzu dam and lake. spent a few days there catching trout in the upper streams and bass and walleye in the causeway near the bridge at the head of the lake.
don"t give up on your garden as most folks do in late summer. i know your fist frost date is some where around October. ( my brother gets snow on halloween near somerset) but you should be able to get some good colder weather greens in  the ground in august for a fall crop. i am blessed here with no real frost till late November. do well with spinach, kale, Essex winter rape, and collards.(no the are not yucky if cooked right).
garden looks great by the way!

I harvested some of my carrots today.

The two on the right hand side had me re-evaluating the method these may propagate.

I did scrub the lower one with vigor.  But, it simply is not pink on the inside.

TT I don't think our carrots will be ready for at least another month, the ones that germinated and grew that is, it was a combination of too much heat and too dry too early.

Ours are Cubanela
               Gypsy
               Corno di Capra
               Corno di Toro Rosso
               Relleno
               Anahiem
               Alma Paprika
               Poblano
               Calabrese
               De Arbol
               Early Jalapeno
               Holy Mole
               Pasilla Bajo
               Cayenne
               Pizza
               Serrano
               Carnival
               Yankee Bell
This year we're going to try to save seed and if it works we'll be up for exchanging.
The ones that I'm really looking to try saving, are the Italian ones because some of them have amazing flavour but what ever works. Now we don't have vast quantities of peppers in the ground but we've got a few of most of them, some we only plant one plant because things like those Cayenne are almost as hot as the Scotch Bonnets and at this age and stage my innards wont take 8 Billion on the Scoville scale any more, mores the pity.

Some really inspiring results here! And more ambition than than I have. Thanks for sharing.

I am near Toronto and it has been very dry here for weeks.

I'm carrying captured rain water to key beds every morning but I do get to enjoy the results every day now. Here is some of today's bounty.

Gardening has turned into a very few tomatos in the backyard, but friends givingh me grocery sacks of them from their places.

Only a few  HG  peppers to make salsa, but grocery store for those and onions and cilantro, etc. That's what I've been doing, 3-4 gallon  batches of salsa.

Funny the year that I pee'd at the corners of the garden not so many critters around, but this year we discovered a Fox after one our roving herds of Wild Turkeys and the bunny Rabbits have been quite discrete of late, so I haven't bothered yet. Maybe I'll have to find a suitable jar. I didn't realize deer went after Pumpkins how about Squash ?

I've got a question about the potatoes I just dug up - about the warts on about half of them. It's been dry here for the last few weeks but I have been watering these beds. Not a lot, maybe 1/2 inch per day for the potatoes. It seems to me that the earlier ones dug didn't have these spots, or had less of them implying that this might have formed recently but that's not very scientific.

Did some research about this and it seems that I have potato scab, harmless but cosmetically not pleasing.

http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/faq6699

The potatoes in my pic tasted great, with the skins on, roasted with olive oil and spices, scab be damned.

jay, try a motion activated sprinkler from your local farm store for the deer. some models run off a 9 volt and work for friends of mine down my way. if all else fails the 22 and the stew pot works too.
got another batch of cukes from the garden today and made up some more pickles. cannot seem to grow them faster than the youngen eats them.

Gourds for shade and to keep the sun from beating down on the house.  The fruit is defeating the purpose, and I was going to ask when I should harvest,  but they're pulling the plant  down. I was hoping they would crawl up on the roof, but not yet. Fruit is too heavy. I cut four on Wednesday.
