we're located in the silicon valley and have a bit of dirt that we grow veggies in. we also have 27 fruit trees that produce several thousand pounds of fruit. we donate much of the fruit to the homeless, but we do keep enough to make 50+ cases of jams, jellies and liquers for our family and friends.

i am also a hobbyist beekeeper and can heartily recommend it as a very interesting and tasty hobby :)
what kind of liquors do you make?
we make pomegranate, pear (with a bit of vanilla bean), limoncello, tangerine, blackberry and cherry liqueurs.

Try using shower doors from the junk yard or the local "Restore" metal frames and some of them have hinges already on them so that you anchor one side and it lifts up so you can get in and plant things drop it down or stick a board under the moveable side for ventilation.

Any one planting yet? We I think have all our seeds now and I think that it's going to be an early spring here (I'll probably regret saying that) and if my knee was better I'd be out driving stakes in the ground for the raised bed walls, sigh.

I am thinking that i should get started with tomato seeds. We got a new cat a month ago. I read that tomato plants are poisonous to cats. She is a real climber so I don't think I'd be successful keeping her off a plant light stand that was anyway convenient to tend and water. What's your experience?

I spread Kale seed a while back outside and realizing it would be winter again I dug some up and brought them inside. Maybe I will kill them inside, the ones that are outside seem to continue growong, adn strangely -warm winter points to all possibilities of a blissard in mid-March.  still no freeze on the seven dau forecast, but we had a dry line with a few big drops of rain and associated dust storm today.  Maybe a hundredth of an inch if it was a trace. Big winds and lots of clouds, no torrents of rain to help with drought but someone in Arkansas must have a rainguage...

I thought for a brief time that I could get out and look at the garden last week. Hah that was until the foot of snow Friday night and now the weather report says cloud, messy and gray until at least Friday, the sow god is pissed again.
Any how, have any of you people been to a seed exchange? My wife went to one yesterday and had a good time checking out the seminars, the sellers and the free seed exchange where she scored a bunch of free seeds, there were tables set up that held packets of spares seeds and the protocol was pick up what you thought was interesting and if you had spare seeds put them on the table for others to try, so she came back with Jamaican pumpkin, Weird pumpkin, two type of Mohawk beans,Soy bean and some Bolivian chilli peppers, and Triticale so more magical mystery seeds this year now if it would only stop snowing and warm up.

Ps My sore leg and the unheated garage are holding me back from working on any thing useful as far as bikes go but we finally got our occupancy permit for the house now, which means that I can finish the work shop cause there's only 4 things to do for the final inspection.

We've got 4-5 rows of peas in, with 4 up, broccoli out and covered, and kale and spinach, now if only they would stop forecasting flurries, although we got some much needed rain yesterday and now the trees are beginning to green up nicely, tomato seedlings potted etc. Weather has been weird, one day lovely and sunny then next cloudy and cool, ah well, spring is sprunging in the "great white north".

live out in country on small farm with goats, llamas, rabbits, and horses, and soon more chickens.  broke ground on brand new garden in undisturbed clay soil  in side yard.  spread out layer of manure on it and tilled it under before first planting.  veggies are now starting popup, so we see how it goes.  may have a load of commercial compost brought in in the fall and till it in next spring with the winter's manure.

Man! I thought I had it bad with a little late frost! I have some romas, big boys, cucumbers, summer squash canteloupe and potatoes (in separate area) going this year. We also are going to start our peppers (banana and jalapeno) and some green beans. My new addition this year....hops! I have them in the back and wire run from garden to back of deck for the climb. This is the first year I am growing these and hear not to expect much from the yield, but second and third year, they take off :) Have a buddy that brews, so I am growing centennial, magnum and cascade. The centennial is already up and through, but not seeing much action on the others yet. Pics always speak more, so I will try and post some soon.

Gardeners Ok. People, who gardens out there, what's you're weather like, vegetables, flowers, trees, soil conditions, urban or rural, what works for you etc ?
Bill the demon.

Zinnias are the easiest for me, the first popped today. They come back every year and need little care to grow.

Any ideas on killing what eats my kale that won't poison me if I eat it?
