Gardeners Ok. People, who gardens out there, what's you're weather like, vegetables, flowers, trees, soil conditions, urban or rural, what works for you etc ?
Bill the demon.

This year was rainier  here like many places. The habanero's went in late, but put on plenty of peppers to make a year's supply of sauce for blazing hot  anything.  Other years were not as good.

I par boil the things to soften the skins and then puree them in a blender with a little bit of vinegar. I'm usually not a fan of vinegar in things and don't like pickles, but that's all I put in.

I figure anything else I spice it with will have the other stuff like garlic,

I had a sack of tomatoes that I made 'regular' salsa with.  My recipe is loosely based on a local restraunt, and cutting the tomatoes by hand really makes it better than any food processor or whatever automated process. I like about any salsa, but the places that puree the tomatoes just don't have the best salsa in town. My  batch last night  was about three or four gallons and used all of my tomatoes.

I dice the tomatoes to 1 cm or so and add them as I cut other ingredients.

I add chopped green unions, red onions, white or yellow onions, fresh corn cut off the cob. If there are a good price on bell peppers I add a red, yellow and orange one to the usual green one. Add cilantro,  chives and or green onions, green chlli peppers blanched and diced or from a can. Add Black and white pepper , enough  you can see it in there.  I have thrown in a can of black beans before.   A squeeze of lemon never hurts, and though I usually let anyone  add their own salt  to taste, I sometimes use the  packs of that  citrus salt you find at  bars.

I don't use  specific recipe or measurements, Just sort of kitchen sink  with a large amount of the  basic ingredients and whatever   is waiting to rot in the fridge .  Just use more peppers and onions depending how many tomatoes there are.  It really is good.

I love fresh salsa, too.
gotta hand cut all veggies if you want the goods.  I usually make about a gallon and go through it in a week.
I add all of the above, along with 2-3 diced jalapenos, 2-3 serranos, 2 over-ripe avocados, and 4 'firm' avocados
The ripe avocados mix in but the firm avocados stay in chunks.  I add cumin to taste.
I loosely chop my cilantro, and secretly add 6-7 (chopped) big thai basil leaves.
gives it an interesting kick.

Oh yeah, I forgot to list the japs and serranos. Japs I got big ones from the store but the serranos were homegrown. Yumm, out of chips and still gallons left. I usually eat the Avacados by themselves.

Not sure what that is.

I went to trimming back the dead and raking it off the last two nice days. Found onions are ready to separate, I had forgot about them since the rabbits gnawed them down to the dirt.

Chives are going to come back, as are most of the spices. Rosemary, sage, lavender. Found a few small carrots and a fennel plant also.

Is this thyme? Not sure what it is, but I know I planted it two years ago.

I use wood ash a lot. I use it along rock borders to kill out weeds and grass, and then after it is in-effective for that I just turn it under in the summers.

Plenty of garlic coming up everywhere I had it last year. It looks like maybe it got a little frost kill.  I like things that do their thing in winter.

I clip the leaves and season a frying pan with them.  They're about to get another cold snap it seems.

From the amount of snow in the front yard and garden I wont see the ground for a month. I'll let you know what I'm planting and how it's going, without my wife to direct it will be interesting.

Starting my seed plantings this week I think, I'm going to try the indoor gig this year. Last year I tried the back porch but it was too late I think and still too cold at night for sprouts.

Got to start my seeds this week coming up but I'm really twitchy about doing it too early because of the amount of snow outside. Don't know if it'll be gone in time. Oh well what the hell.

I had some of what they call purple heart in water rooting indoors all winter. It is pretty hardy to frost so I put it outside in pots thinking it was safe, but noticed it had frozen and is probably not going to come back.

I also had a pineapple top I rooted last summer and luckily didn't put it out until later, may have to remember to bring it in before Tuesday when it freezes again.

Anyone ever grown  pineapple? They seem to do okay here at 35' north even when it is dry they don't seem to wilt or  die off.

I wonder what it will do the second year, maybe a fruit?

Pinapples grow well around my place, we are about 25' south.  They need very little water, hence why they are grown here, but they do take forever and a day to produce fruit.  I think it's about 2 to 2 1/2 year to get fruit after planting the crown. ;D

Water around my area has been tight over the past few months so I have been experimenting with passive deep water culture hydroponics.  I started with a kale plant, it had been stunted as a seedling for nearly 6 months.  In 2 weeks it had tripled in size now is a monster.  I then tried some herbs, I took some cuttings off our herbs around the place and set them in the boxes.  I think the following picture shows the basil likes it.  I've never seen basil leaves so big.  The plant I took the cutting off of has leaves no longer than an inch long.  Now they only use about two litres (about 1/2 us gallon) of water per week for the herb box, which has 10 plants in it.  Next I'm going to try some gold nugget pumpkins. ;D

Most all of my seeds have come up and strong! I'm worried I won't be ready for them outside before they get too big!
This year I tried making a self-watering planter, it worked very, very well. There are lots of ideas for them on the net, I went with some plastic tubs I got from work for free, they're something like 2" deep by 12" long by 8" wide, give or take a bit on any dimension.
I poked a bunch of holes in the bottom of three of them and strung cotton cording through, then filled three more tubs with water and nested the three planters in them, the cord wicks the water up to the soil and the seeds seem to love it, not too wet, never dry.

The only seeds I'm fairly certain I won't see sprout are the Rutgers tomatos, or as I call them, the 'basement tomatos'.
I had found them in an unopened seed packet in the basement when we were renovating bathroom over the dirt crawl space. They were packaged for 1996! I was actually really hoping one little trooper might sprout out of the bunch. :P

Anyway, now I have to get cracking on the yard and figure out the best/cheapest raised bed I can build.

I've just about got all the seeds in their containers but I'm not panicking yet I figure there's 1-1 1/2 feet of snow in the garden, around here the wisdom is nothing goes into ground until the 24th May this year I'm figuring June 1st.

The seeds I scattered outside are all mixed up, lettuce , kale and spinach seem to be coming up.
I will put those into rows soon.

had a guy asking to buy some smudge sticks so I cut back the spindly sage tops and bundled them up.  Gardening show said to cut them back to the ground, but some I buried the long stems so they will root as separate plants.

Flowers are volunteering again, zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers and luckily only a few dandelions.

Here's a heads up for the landscapers- Home Depot has their colored mulch on sale 5 for $10 which is close to half off.
