We've been a bit dry, so that we have had to water the garden but the humidex has been running 30-37 deg to point where first time in my life I've come down with Prickly Heat, God, it's wonderful to be old and have a secound childhood. Gee Sam see what you've got coming your way.

So I'm asking for gardening advice on a motorcycle forum - go figure??

It's about my tomatos. The plants started out great this year. Vigorous, big growth and lots of tasty tomatos. No bugs that I could see, especially not those big tomato caterpillars. I have been watering them once in a while, especially during the dry spells.

They have come down with something that kills the plant and causes blemishes in the fruit (see pics). It has affected, I would say, about 1/4 of the harvest and today, when I was out there, most of the plants are wilted, the leaves are all dry and black (although the stems are still green) and most of the last pickings of tomatoes look like the pics.

I'm thinking that it is a virus of some sort? Any body else seen this or have some wisdom about it?

I had this problem last year and maybe by mistake put the tomato plants in the same row this year. Also, the next row over is potatoes which did really well. Could that be a factor? The potatoes weren't in that row last year.

Should I check the timing? Advance? Change the type of motor oil? Re-chrome?

Thanks

Maybe this can help:
http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/garden/02949.html
I was wondering if it could be fusarium, but it might be a bacterial thing, according to the above link.

My catnip's still going great guns.  I snip buds off, dry 'em for a week or two, and crush 'em up in a ziploc bag.  Seems way, way more potent than the store-bought stuff.  The cats are very happy.  The mint has aphids and spider mites. :P  I might have to go buy some tobacco to make a nicotine spray.  The rosemary has the same mites but to a lesser extent, maybe just because it has such a strong taste/smell.

I just got a membership to the local Japanese garden.  I now know exactly what I want my yard to look like someday...:D

Thanks Kit! A good read. Sounds like fusarium or a couple of the others. Ugly stuff. One thing fer sure. I've got sanitize, get rid of the plants now, pick up all the dead stuff and get what I've already thrown in the compost out of there and throw it into the forest away from the garden. Next year the tomatoes will go at the other end of the garden.

We have a Japanese garden here at the local U of Guelph Arboretum which is very nice.

This is the first 1/4 of the harvest, I think I brought in 100-120 lbs of tomatoes yesterday ahead of forecast rain so that the little gems won't split, I only brought in ones that were large enough to use for normal uses the cherry and smaller will have to wait. Now we're dependent on the weather to get the next bunch.

Wow, a very nice harvest Bill! (and a nice picture!)

Mine got a blight of some kind and all my plants are now burned and the ground cleaned up. I will have to plant elsewhere on the property and hope that it does not recur.

Yes CinD mine are developing fusarium wilt too and this is new dirt, so I think a combination of weeds being close by and possibly seed with the problem I'll have to plant resistant seed next year in different places, I've done a little research on problem and found out pine bark helps suppress Fusarium apparently we have not too much pine bark but huge amounts of pine needles so we plan on digging in pine needles into beds this fall along with a little urea for nitrogen and see what that does, now I don't know if we can get resistant heirlooms but I'll research that and let you know, by the way you do know that if the variety has an F after it's name it's supposed to be fusarium resistant.

Cookindaddy we just harvested some Jimmy Nardello peppers they are brilliant ultra sweet with a great pepper flavor, next year a bunch more they're also great for drying.

Bill
those are some nice tomatoes.

Here in Vermont we all got hit with the black fungus last year. Everyone within a radius of 60 miles at least were also hit.
Even my brother the back-to-earth, natural super-gardener lost all his tomatoes last year. This
year we have a better crop without the blight. Will take your advice and work in pine needles as
I have many pine trees.

Will be picking up a load of cow manure next month to mix in before the snow hits.

peace,
michel

I took the last of the beautiful leeks out of the garden today and that's it for the garden, nothing left in there. All the weeds are cleaned up.

The weather is looking great this week. Lots of work still to do outside to get ready for the bad weather coming. The bike is put away. Yah I know, should be riding but still all this work to finish outside.

A good friend has 2 big house bunnies. Lucky me. They are poop machines. I unloaded the first round of poop and recycled paper material for litter in the outdoor garden for next year. I have some saved for the cloned roses indoors.

Ordered seeds yesterday, must mean that spring is coming, we are going to9 rationalize this year not so many tomatoes and watering system is going in, then maybe I can get the rest of the building projects finished this year, said with great hope.

Where do you order your seeds from Bill?

I have been growing sprouts in a mason jar. Last batch was alfalfa and they tasted pretty good. Much better than the ones from the store and not as overgrown. Nice on a salad or in a sandwich.

That's about as much gardening as I can do with two feet of snow outside.

But thinking about spring and seeds.
