65 years ago TODAY.

Nazi Germany ended, and civility returned to mankind.

Think on that....and the pain that was caused for a moment, please.

Yeah ,  a moment of silence.

Absolutely! There NEVER needs to be anything even close to THAT happen AGAIN! :-\

I remember hearing SOME folks actually questioning that it happened, in the first place! Can YOU imagine THAT! :o I sure can't! That WHOLE ordeal was SO Traumatic and HORRIFYING! I don't know WHAT WE were thinking, when we once belonged to a tape club, we ened up getting Scheindler's (spelling?) List and it might have been (I don't remember know) that Brenda got it because she is was of German ancestry and wanted to know what happened and why. We got the movie one day, in the mail, watched it (or at least part of it) 1 time and put it away with the other movies. It has NEVER been watched completely. I just can't watch something like that, much less enjoy it.

Matter of fact, IF there is anyone who would want this movie, let me know and I will send it to you. No Charge, not even shipping. I just don't feel comfortable having it here and it will just waste away, because we will NEVER watch it again.

Thanks for posting.
I remember my Mom talking about the celebration that it was over. She was five at the time and she and her friends were running up and down the street beating pots with spoons.

In addition to the 6 million plus Jews that died, there were also millions of sevicemembers who left home and their loved ones and never came home......wives widowed, children orphaned, and the surviving servicemembers, many came home broken.

For what?

I pray, that as humans, something was learned, something was gained.

but, 65 years ago today, the clouds parted over Germany, and the sun shined again.

Thank God

I'm old enough not to remember the war except in passing, my most vivid memories of that time were my mom running hot water through a can that holes punched in it with hand soap scraps in it for to wash dishes, just after the war finding clipping of an article in the Vancouver Sun newspaper featuring my mom ,dad and me as the typical wartime family she the welder, he the tinsmith working different shifts at Burrard drydock. After that in the RCAF running into a bunch of retreads from England, Canada, Some had risen to the rank of Squadron Leader and been busted down to Corporal so that they could stay in, some from the army, at least one Pat ( who had toured some of the camps and hated Germans with a passion ) some from the RCN and yeah, not all of them could be lying about the horrendous things that took place. Any how thank god it was over 65 years ago.

One of my old neighbors and a guy I worked for served in the army in Europe and saw the camps.  The only hope for the future is that what they saw and experienced will not be forgotten or re-written to reflect a different view.  As so many of the vets have passed on, who will speak for them as to what they saw ??

My Grandfather was a POW held by the Germans during WWII. Only told a few very selective stories about his time there...even in the memoires he typed up prior to passing.

I think this is a good excuse to drop by his grave side on the drive home...

As I stated in my earlier post the guy I worked for was in Europe when the war over there ended.  His unit was to return to the states to refit and then be sent to the Pacific Theater.  When the announcement was made that Japan had surrendered he said he sat down and cried.  I asked him was it because he was happy, he said no, he cried because he knew he would live.  I never forgot that.

When my wife and I were first married we lived in a 8 unit apartment building.  One of the older couples that lived there became our close friends.  On Christmas Day we stopped in to say hi.  The husband was at work and the wife was sitting there kind of sad.  We asked what was the matter and without a word she showed us the telegram dated December 24, 1944 stating that her husband who was in the Ardennes, Belgium, was missing in action.  She did not find out until the war ended in Europe that he was badly wounded and a POW in Germany.  Miss them both.
