1973 CB350F: Ignition troubles (???)
« on: May 17, 2010, 05:27:00 PM »
Just bought a 350F.  Bike had sat indoors for about 5 years, carb rebuild done before it sat.  Got the bike running this weekend and tried to take it back to spec as much as possible.

Before I sync'd the carbs, I attempted to time the bike with the new points and condensors I ordered.  Put the timing let on it and 1&4 were hitting dead on the "F" mark at idle.  Switched to 2&3... the "F" mark for 2&3 seemed to stradle the pointer.  It was like it was going back and forth between being retarded and advanced.  Nobody get excited, it is a small variance, but it is noticable.

The bike ran great after the sync, except I got into high gear on the road and I seemed to hit a wall at 60 mph.  I'd say I was at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, and anymore twist wouldn't do anything for me.  Keep in mind I'm 220 lbs.

My plan is to ride it for awhile- let it wake up from its sleep and clean itself out.  I won't be able to check any suggestions anyone makes until this weekend as I am traveling.  Thanks in advance- or retard- or whatever.

Is it possible your bike is geared to hell and back and running out of RPMs?  Just a thought...
If it runs great (no popping, snorting, it idles well, pulls off the line) it may not be the ignition.  My 350 has no need for more than 3/4 throttle - it goes flat if you give it more than that.  Just a nature of the little beast, air fuel mix and the total cfm a 350 can pump and all that jazz.
It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

Hondaman has a post somewhere where he describes that issue.  In the FAQ perhaps.

Dirty air filter maybe?  How do the plugs look?
