Help with PD carbs.

Putting my carbs back together, can't figure out how the springs between  2 and 3 on the choke valve shafts. do they need to be wound up? how do the choke valve shafts connect. these diagrams don't show very detailed. Any help really appreciated.. just wanna get my bike finished!!!!

they are not great pictures, but should help. 1st the two shafts do not actually link, the small spring does that, and also acts as a damper.

larger spring goes between #2 carb body and end of shaft (this is the return spring), one end hooks around boss on #2 carb and into slot on shaft end.  you can see spring ends in this picture (2nd end is directly above just wrapping over)


smaller spring links shafts. one end hooks onto end of 2nd shaft (small centered notch), and then hooks to same part as 1st spring, only slightly farther back. do not add extra twists as this will cause to much tension.

the spring end coming up is the larger one in its slot

Damnit! How the hell do you get the plate that holds all 4 carbs together. Since I installed the new o rings on the joint sets the damn things wont squeeze together enough to the point that the choke valve shafts and the upper shaft won't even turn. I've been working on these things for like 4 hours... If i can get the plate on will it put enough force on the joint sets to straighten everything out???

are you talking about the fuel tubes?  I seem to remember that the centre one is slightly longer than the ones between 1/2, 3/4.  if you have it in the wrong position this will cause misalignment, and shaft binding.  I found that if I loose assembled them in two pairs, with the top shaft through 3 / 4 (because of pinned idle adjuster), then slide the second pair on, installing the centre fuel tube and air balance, and bell crank.  at this point the throttle slides, & bell crank are not attached but loose. then attached the mounting plate, and support bars (finger tight).  check that shafts move freely, then tighten back plate bolts. now connect the slides to the shaft, and allow to self centre, always checking for free movement. note that you can not reuse the butterfly screws, as they were peened at the factory and the start threads are damaged. I replaced mine with SS M3 button allens, and secured with fresh Locktite blue (has 1 yr shelf life).  it is important that the butterfly pairs are only finger tightened at 1st, and you allow them to self centre before tighting down or you will get binding, and the choke shaft will stick.

i just did away with my choke springs and welded the shafts together.  i'll weld or screw a small tab onto the end so when i need to turn my choke on i'll just pull that up or down.  it won't be the easiest to use, but it'll work and it'll save me the money from trying to track down the choke assembly that's impossible to find!!  would you like to see pictures of this?

Well I finally got the whole assembly together... I think those o rings just needed to be compressed really well. Anger and frustration can come in handy ;D now all I need are new Choke valve screws. One thing I don't like about these PD carbs is that there isn't a choke "lever", rather the assembly that requires a cable. I would like to see some pics of your setup...

wannabridin - yes, all the non alloy parts were re CAD plated, the alloy stuff ultrasonic cleaned / micropolished.  not finished yet, still have emulsion tube, and atmospheric air mods to make, along with finish install of SS allen's (will have set of fresh CAD external bolts left over, offers?)

thanks Joe.  worked for a restoration shop (MG / Jag / Lotus) for couple of years.  SU's / Webers / distributors / hand bent & aeroquip fuel & brake lines were my specialty.  trying to bring that level of detail / finish to my 550 build.  also learned to let the pro's do their thing, hence I have jobbed out my welding, and some painting.  As well I love billet so there will be lots of that, some bought, some from my CAD designs. having hijacked this thread  :-[, will now return to regular scheduled progaming (my build  ;D)

check out the pics of my setup.  the macro couldn't focus with my point and shoot well enough to get a good shot, but that's the pictures i have so far.  to keep the choke opened where i want it, i installed rubber o-rings instead of making new felt ones.  i figure that the choke wont be used much at all (Hondaman ignition box when i get the funds) so i won't have to worry about them breaking down that bad.  i did use new felt pieces on the slide lever though
