Motorcycle Hauler
« on: November 24, 2010, 09:23:15 PM »
Has anyone tried one of these carriers: http://www.discountramps.com/smc-600-motorcycle-hauler.htm

I'm thinking of using one for my K6, but I want to know if anyone's had a bad experience with them.

Looks pretty cool. Trying to figure out what the bracket in the back is for and if tie-downs are required (I would  use them no matter what) Little steep at $930.00 + shipping from UK

I had this one for my dirtbikes (carried 2 at a time)  And it was excellent....as long as your reciever/hitch was up to the task.

You're going to want to make sure it's WELL mounted to your truck frame.... and sturdy...as that is a lot of weight cantelievered off of the mounts.

But mine worked SLICk and I really liked it....

Thanks for the info, guys. I haven't made up my mind yet. The hauler has a good price, but I don't want to try to save a few hundred bucks now and then have to spend a grand to fix a bike that's fallen off the back.

I've got a class III hitch, and I've towed quite a bit of stuff with it. So while I'm not too concerned with the hitch, the suspension on my truck is going out. We'll see...

That roll-on trailer is slick, but the price is steep!

I would say just get a 4x8 utility trailer with a tailgate and use that. A CB750 weighs a little over 500lb + the 100lb of the hitch carrier. I guess that could do it if your truck is up to it.

I settled on a 6x8.5' trailer so I can load 3 bikes side by side. I also whipped up a hitch carrier for my dirt bike and I like it. I run straps from the tie down points in my truck over the tailgate to the ends of the carrier to stabilize it. It's rock solid with my 280lb dirt bike. Don't know about a 500+ lb street bike.

Here's a pic of the trailer and in the back you can see the dirt bike on the carrier. I made the bike sit as close as it could so it would minimize the cantilever effect.

I wanted to go the trailer route because it definitely seems the most stable option. But I live in an apartment building, and I only have one parking spot--not sure I want to give that up for a trailer.

I posted the same question a few months ago:

Turns out my hitch doesn't meet the tongue weight specs needed for a hitch carrier.

It is steep but might be worth the price to folks who don't have the room to store a standard trailer.  I wish one would pop up on Craigslist in my area.
