Holland

Liberation Day in Holland 65 years ago, Watched Vets and Citizens march, celebrate and have a good time, some of the Vets don't look like they'll make another one but, trucking along never the less. If any one tells you that WW 2 was bs go to CBC and explore their archives, there are pictures that put the lie to that.

Yup watched them this morning marching. Each year there are less and less. Interesting in the poll that was conducted stating most between 18-25 wouldn't volunteer to fight today. The "me" attitude at its best.

That's a place I'd like to know more about, since my ancestry is said to have begun there. ;)

Shame is, a person can have this fantasy about what a place or thing is like and you are excited. THEN, when you actually see the place or thing and are face to face with it, reality sets in. I'm just talking in general. I've had this happen, as I'm sure others have too. It is really a letdown, when it does. :-\ Sometimes it's better NOT knowing. :-X

Where did that comment come from?

Came from a Nato report recently on an investigation why the Dutch Contingent capitulated so easily to Serbian militias in Sebrenica and failed so catastrophically to protect the muslim bosnians in their enclave.
If memory serves me rightly the Nato officer that wrote that report was..........American.

Funny thing about regret is...... its better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done.

"Many 18-25 would not fight".....

Many world leaders I believe, are counting on that.

The youth of today do have a "me-me" culture but I also think they would not fight because of their distrust in the "higher" or decision making classes of society. And to be honest, I'm with them on that one.

I had uncles that fought in Europe and the Pacific, one lost his life and three returned. One saw the pow and concentration camps, came home and had a one time question session with family then never spoke of it again. My mother passed the stories on to me.

Back to topic....It seems that the average Dutch person remembers more what the Canadians did, then we do ourselves.

We are slowly loosing the Veterans who helped liberate Holland.

My wife is over in Holland with 2600 Canadian high school students  right now,and they were at the Groesbeek ceremony.

Hoping to help the younger generation to remember

I have had the opportunity to stand as part of the Honour Guard at Groesbeek on Remembrance Day.

Holland is clearly one of the "grateful nations".

It is still part of their school system to assign children to Canadian military graves, and it is that one students responsibility to maintain and take care of that grave.

That absurd and insulting. First of all, I don't see why a homosexual would be an inferiour soldier. Second, I doubt we have a lot of them in our army.... You don't have military draft here, so all those soldiers are paid proffesionals who volunteer to go fight abroad.
And from what was explained to me by people who were actually there, they were seriously underarmed and could not be given airsupport at that time. There were a lot of guys actually willing to fight the Serbs even though they only had light machine guns and were facing tanks. But they were simply not allowed to.

@ Bill440: If you're curious about your background I could snoop the local archives here in Amsterdam. Do you have a typical Dutch last name? PM me if you're interested.
